Hi Everyone,

I'm going to swap my 20 inch Conti's for Michelin Pilot 4 - anyone have any experiences to share regarding noise? I'm a fan of the Scorpions but am going to try these out...any insight much appreciated!

*Updated 10/18: Reason being, I am experiencing a humming noise at most speeds, but the dealership says there is nothing wrong with hub/bearings/etc., meaning it must be the tires. Audio link HERE, thoughts welcome

I have Pilot Sport 4S on my VR and have not noticed any noise increases. Assuming those are what you mean by "Michelin Pilot 4".

If you mean the Michelin All-Season Pilot Sport tires, I had a great experience with them on my BMW 535 X-Drive--maybe not completely relevant, but I am planning to mount them on my XC60 when the Scorpions need to be replaced. They also get good reviews on Tire Rack.

FWIW, our 2017 XC90 and 2021 XC90 came with factory Pirelli Scorpions. Road noise and balance are terrible. We put the AS3’s on the 2017 at 45k miles. Now with 91k miles on the car, the tires are smooth, quiet, and they wear exceptionally. Still have 15-20k miles of life on them.

The 2021 has 33k miles and I cannot wait to switch to the AS4’s when they wear out.

The OEM continentals have only a few hundred miles on them and are listed for sale if anyone is interested (best offer) and are listed in the classified section :)
I swapped the Pirelli Scorpion High Performance Summer Tires to the Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4, 265/35ZR22 - XL/102Y on my current vehicle. On my previous, the 2020 XC60 T8 I had eqipped Pirelli Scorpions and can tell you that the Michelin ride quieter than those and they feel really tight (grip the road well) and I have not noticed any increase or bothersome noise at all.

I swapped from the OEM 21" Pirelli Scorpion with noise canceling foam to the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 AS, which don't have the noise canceling foam. Haven't noticed really any noise difference around town - freeway there may be a bit more of a drone depending on the quality of pavement but that could also be the tread breaking in. Otherwise happy with the tire, plus I don't have to worry about yet another potential source of vibration with foam coming unglued. I've found Pirellis to be a bit brittle/crashy compared to Michelins, especially the lower profile you go. Haven't really gotten a chance to test traction - it's been unusually dry in Seattle so far this fall! From what I've read they probably would be a decent year-round tire for here but I do have a set of Pirelli Winters to get me through snowy mountain pass travel season (was the only available winter option last year for my wheel size).

I too prefer the Michelins. Good call to switch.
I couldn’t stand the Scorpions, replaced them and the heavy as hell factory 20” wheel. 19x9, Fifteen52 and 275/40 Firestone Indy 500…..excellent summer setup. Winter is an 18” TSW with Vredestein tires.

The saga continues! I thought the tires were just loud, hence the desire to replace them. It's become apparent, however, that that they are actually defective (or installed incorrectly by my dealership). The dealership says everything is normal, but I know, for a fact, that it's not - I've opened a warrantee claim with Continental but expect zilch. Not sure what else I can do besides give my dealership more and more hassle until they do something about it...I'm exhausted and it's making the car not even be fun anymore.

Continental tires aren't great. Just replace them.

Update: Continental is going to replace all 4 tires with a set that has foam in them. I thought some of you might find the sound interesting to hear, and possibly even provide some thoughts on too while we wait for the new ones to show up :). The sound clip linked below was recorded on a smooth highway at 25 MPH in rolling traffic. **Best listened to on headphones

Happy to say that the issue is solved! I called Continental and explained the issue - they agreed to warrantee replace the tires, and I upgraded to the Continental ProContact RX (with foam) for, like, $30/tire extra out of pocket. I also paid for a full alignment (even though it seemed fine) and road-force balance, just to be 100% sure, and the car is quiet as a mouse and rides like a cloud.

Thinking back on it, Continental was very quick to agree to a full replacement upon providing the DOT number from the sidewall, so I'm wondering if there was a known defective batch? A bit irritating to go through, but wanted to update the thread incase anyone else goes through the same thing. As a side note, the RX tires are possibly the smoothest and quietest tire I've ever come across, if you're thinking of a new set.

I have exactly the same problem with my 2019 xc60 and 20” Continental Cross Contact LX Sport tires. I visited 3 different volvo dealers and all they said everything is ok with my wheels. What exactly are your new tires?
