So I was super excited because I bought some sweet gunmetal/titanium gray mirrors from an 07 S40 so I could swap out my smaller 05 ones. They are power mirrors, but don't have the puddle lights for some reason. Anyhow, after spending forever trying to figure out how they would install I figured it out, and it wasn't really that hard at all: just remove the door panel, a few electrical chords to unplug, one bolt to loosen, remove the mirror, and put in the new one and reattach all the chords. The mirrors are identical in the way they hook up.
However, the damn things don't work: no turn signal lights, no power mirror functions. WTF?! Does anyone have any idea why these wouldn't in work? They are completely identical when it comes to the chord. I am wondering if somehow they are duds and weren't tested to work before they were sold, but I bought them from a major parts distributing company so I'd assume they would work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. The mirrors look awesome, but if they don't work it kind of defeats the purpose of having a better viewing mirror...

Pics of the mirrors installed:

Did you check all the terminals and the charges of the wires?
Sounds like theres a short or some missed connection.
Perhaps there was even a voltage change or something between the years.

Check the pins to see if they are lose, with everything connected and the signal lights set to "on", wriggle on each pin connector and see if there is any light. I had my HID pin being a loose connection between the 2 harnesses and the HID going in and out after each bump. Had to bend the pin slightly to have tension and a steady connection.
Or maybe the mirrors are just mirrors without the light bulbs? Like if you buy a headlight housing or the rear lights housing, they do not come with bulbs.

Re: (fone)

Nah, the bulbs can be seen, and even if the bulbs don't work or weren't there I should still be able to adjust them but I can't...I'm thinking they might be heated or something, so maybe a different voltage is needed to power them? I didn't think Volvo would change the mirrors that much especially since they are basically identical; but obviously something is different enough to make the 05 unable to power 07. Guess that is what I get for being a guinea pig...

Re: (carreragt7)

Ill have to check the wiring diagram and see if there is any electrical changes between model years. It may have different options than yours and something small like one or two wires are in different terminals. Did you check the wire colors between the 05 connector and 07 connector?

Re: (ForceFed Motorsports)

+1 on ForceFed Motorsports' comment
Check your color codes. If you have experience with a multimeter it shouldn't be that hard to locate what wires are what body side, but mirror side, I couldn't tell you. If ForceFed can't come up with a wiring diagram for you, I'll make one seeing as I have an 07 with working lights and mirrors.
Hint with the multimeter, check which wire has continuity with the - battery terminal first. The blinker should have slightly larger gauge wire than the mirror motor I think.
Most likely there is nothing wrong with the mirrors, but for whatever reason, automakers almost NEVER follow the same wire layout from year to year.

Re: (laser8302)

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately for me, I am completely willing to admit I don't know crap about electrical systems or anything like that, and definitely don't know how to use a multimeter or know what it even looks like.
It looks like I would have to move back to Seattle in order to be surrounded by the most fellow SSers with S40s. Frustrating because I know no one locally that has another S40, and the few that I have seen are base models and 04.5s or 05-06. The dealership here is also full of money sucking leeches that wouldn't be of any help on such a mod as this, but of course they'd be willing to charge for it anyway...

They're quite simple to use. This looks like a good model:
http://www.amazon.com/Equus-33...otive
Others may have better recommendations. The two main things you will use it for is to measure resistance (low or zero resistance = continuity) and to measure the presence of a specific voltage. Simply put, you turn the multimeter on, set the dial to select what you want to measure, attach the leads, and read the display.
Challenge yourself: Learn how to use one. You won't regret it. I am not a handy person, but even I have a multimeter.

Re: (Munin)

Thanks for the info Munin!
I am slowly learning more about different systems and what not in our cars, but I am on overload right now from work and everything else: would an AutoZone or similar type auto place have one of those that they could test the mirrors/my car with? Or any other places that could do such a thing?

Do they have motors to fold inwards themselves? I might consider getting a pair for my car to decrease blindspots as well as convenience of the motors to fold in the mirrors (after u get them solved )

Re: (fone)

To be honest I am not sure. Where I bought them from was a big liquidation type store that sells auto parts and they are guaranteed to work in the same model/year as the car they were pulled from, so I don't know how much trouble I would have trying to return them since I don't have the 'correct' year. I didn't think there was anything different besides size but the new ones don't have a puddle light. I also don't know how, if they were folding, they would fold because I don't think I have a switch or wiring to control that. At this point not sure what to do with them, I will give them a good look over when I get off work but if it is too much hassle the 05 mirrors were bearable.
Re: (carreragt7)

If push comes to shove, I can figure out the wiring on my car and compare it to what is in the VADIS DVD. (07 isn't covered in VADIS, but the version I have I believe covers 05) From there, I can tell you exactly what wires go where. I hope you can just disassemble the connector mirror or body side and re-wire it. Otherwise I hope you are either handy with a soldering iron or know someone who is. Your last option is ship the mirrors to me and I can re-wire them for you.
Also, on the 07 there was no power folding option for the mirrors.

Re: (laser8302)

Thanks for all the help guys!
When I get off work I will take a good look at them. I figured if I really wanted the bigger mirrors I could take the internals of the 05 and put them in the 07 housing with the larger mirror glass as long as they were removable. I'll post up what I find tonight. And if it came down to too much for me to handle I wouldn't have a problem shipping them to you Laser, but hopefully it won't get to that much work. Thanks.

Sounds just right, lol! I don't see anything wrong (from a guys point of view) of dating an adult that is in her prime. Now from the woman's point of view I guess it can be revolting depending on the guys age (think super rich old guy)...
