So, after my 1200 mile break in, how is the 4-6,000 range?
4 grand comes up pretty quickly. And with manuals, I wind them out even in everyday driving.
Can't wait to see what extra oomph I get from the upper range.
Oh yeah, my brakes are squeaking already.

My breaks only used to squeek when I DIDN'T beat them to death. Got the squeek fix, and haven't had a squeek since.

Stock form it kinda runs out of breath past 5,500 rpm.

O.K. another question for the guys bored at work (like myself ) at what range do most of you 'manuals' like to drive casually?
I hang right around 2500-3000. I also find that my brakes only squeak when I have not been using them hard enough. A few hard applications removes any glazing or whatever is on there.
I think the engine just loosens up a little after you get some miles on it.
I typically shift at around 3 grand under normal acceleration, maybe a bit higher actually due to the delay between the motor and the tach. I often skip 4th gear and shift from 3rd to 5th when driving around town.

In typical driving, I always go to at least 4000 in first, and usually take most of the other gears to that same mark before shifting . . . that way you're always in the meaty part of the torque curve -- if you ever need to gun it, you can, and you'll just GO. Once I get to my desired cruising speed, I then upshift into higher gears regardless of rpm, and just cruise in 6th.
What you want to try to do when you're not cruising is ensure that you are always in that 2500 to 4500 rpm range. That's where the R sings. Keep her there, and she'll never disappoint when you hit the throttle.
Of course, for maximum acceleration runs, I run the rpms beyond 4500.

You just have to modulate the throttle correctly. Learn where your turbo starts to spool up and provide boost (slightly before 2500 rpm), and pre-emptively provide less throttle as you transition into the boost range.
So you give it more gas at intial clutch engagement (when the turbo isn't boosting), then give less to compensate for the added boost. If you do it right, your rate of acceleration can be quite smooth and linear. Doing this will allow you to get into that 2500 to 4500 sweet spot, and do so smoothly.
If you always shift before 2500, you will get walked EVERY TIME . . . and by illegal immigrants in minivans with the flame stickers going the wrong direction too. That's just embarrassing.

I was just informed that the squeal was a MY04,05 issue. Not a MY06 issue.
So, I will need to drop it off to have it looked at.
I think I will drive it a while longer to see if it goes away.
Eric

Don't really need too much power in the city unless I'm pulling a hill or something. I usually upshift through the rest of the gears at around 3000 rpm, sometimes skipping a few (like from 2nd to 4th) on level roads.

That keeps your revs above 2000. Car doesn't move below 2000 rpm.
If you are having casual fun to 60 mph, shift at 4000 rpm. That keeps revs above 3000 rpm, where turbo starts.
If you are racing, shift at 6000-6500 rpm. Opinions differ here based on torque output, but a good rule of thumb is 6300.
