So I says to myself "Self I says, I really don't like torque steer, where did my AWD go?"
I was in 2nd gear entering a highway, I was cruising at about 40km/hr @ ~3000RPM and the way cleared and so I got into the throttle when I heard a nasty snap sound and felt the car pull hard left and felt thud-thud-thud-thud. I was sure I had blown the front right tire [edit: LEFT tire] but then it was smooth again ???
I entered the highway cautiously and eased back into the throttle and things felt 'okay'. Got off at the next exit to have a look and saw nothing wrong with the tires. That's when it occured to me that the AWD was gone and it was easily confirmed by easy wheel spin in 1st and 2nd (3rd too, I think).
I also hear/feel a light clunking/clacking when backing up and/or making parking manouvers.
Yes, I'll be into the dealer asap but is there a way in the mean time for me to know what went bust? Was it the angle gear or the collar gear (or something else)?
I'm at 48K Km's and have a stock ECU.
For cross-posting purposed here's a useful link:
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=113680
This car and it's owner are really sad without it's AWD
LTA

Out of curiousity what are your driving habits like? Ever launch the car?

Sorry to hear, let us know how the repair goes
....
EDIT if it were the angle gear failing in catastrophic fashion, there's a good chance you would have seen fluid....
some people crawl under the car and spin the driveshaft, if it spins freely, the collar is dead
then there is also Jim Lill's angle gear test...but I don't think that would help you in this situation.

Well, you can do the JimLill AWD test (even though I'm / we're / you're pretty sure it's already gone). Jack up a front wheel and spin it, whilst looking under the car to visually check (as opposed to what, audibly check? ) if the driveshaft turns. If it doesn't, no AWD (failure of sleeve or angle gear). Like I said though, it's pretty much guaranteed though. Sorry man...
-Steve

Sounds like it could be either. I'm leaning more towards collar but at this point it sounds like the angle gear is coming out anyway so make sure they check the collar gear. It'll probably be seized on the trans anyway.

Re: SNAP! Thud-thud-thud... AWD gone! Angle gear or collar gear? (FEO)

Thanks for everyone's sympathy but I'm not too bothered by it and just glad it happened after the winter (and I'm still under factory warranty). I plan to keep this car for the long haul so I'm glad I have VIP (but what happens after that? Maybe IPD has heavy duty replacement parts by that time).

Quote, originally posted by xman03 »

Out of curiousity what are your driving habits like? So Im still trying to understand this angle/coller gear failure nonsence. Was the angle gear built with weak components or we just cant drive this car that hard? The drive shaft test is teh easiest way to determine the failure of the AWD system?
One of these days i need to read these threads because i am still trying to understand why so many of us are having this issue but i dont even know where to start since there are so many of them!

My car is in the shop for the same exact problem...it sucks don't it. I'm hoping that mine failed at the collar gear because according to my 3mo/3000mi waranty from the used car dealer, my "powertrain warranty" only covers internal components of the engine and transmission. What a joke. So I just hope it isn't the angle gear and they have to pay up.
I put my car up on a lift and spun the driveshaft, no resistance from the rear wheels at all.

Volvo needs to be flogged severely for making such cheese.

Re: SNAP! Thud-thud-thud... AWD gone! Angle gear or collar gear? (Needsdecaf)

As most suspected, the failure was with the collar gear (or sleeve as it's called in Vadis).
Angle gear was fine
I might get the terms wrong but the way I understand it from my tech is that from the factory the case is assembled completly dry but the new collar gear gets installed with lots lubricant to fill the case (as part of the service kit, I think) which is intended to increase longevity by keeping any wear particles from building up in the wrong places.
My tech is simply FANTASTIC, his attention to detail and throughness sets the bar very high. I gladly drive 25mins and pay a $7 toll one way to get his service! He addressed and solved a number of other related and unrelated issues (in addition to the 5 page list I left him with).
All was covered under factory warranty (just had to pay to patch my tire, which in retrospect should be covered under VIP less a $25 deductible). Hopefully this collar will last well beyond my VIP contract term.
I love my AWD R!
LTA
