Success! Finally, so on top of today being my last day of high school EVER im ready to smoke my tails. I was thinking of just smoking the white part a little so it matches my grey car and maybe a lighter coat on the red. I could still go all black. what do you guys think?

Re: Smoked tail ideas needed.... (GetDown)

I did 3 light coats on my red, and one light coat on my reverse light strip. It gave the reverse a smoked out look while still being useful in backing up, I'm not sure if the reverse light pictured above loses too much light, but it does look good.
With my rear window 5% limo tint I need full reverse light power.

You can cut your current stock rear to fit them and I think it would look good until you found another rear piece you like more.

These are pics in sun light. Its exactly how i wanted it. Just dark red in sun light and yet at night or in the shade they look fairly black. Im not doing a black theme though, just dark theme so i didnt want them black.
The finish is as your paint on your car feels. Used automative grade clear coat over the night shades

I was wondering while looking at this topic, is there a place where i can get tint film that is cut to the shape of the lights? Or does everyone just custom cut it themselves?

I used VHT Nightshades. Check the post called "I think they turned out ok...". Thats my car. I still have a full can after one coat over the whole thing and two coats on the reverse lights. It was too easy

Did you guys sand the tails at all prior to doing this? Also, did you just get some clear coat in a can? My concern is the durability...I live in VT where harsh winters could do a number on these. Also, is it reverseable if I needed to remove?

I only let each light dry for an hour before I drove for 2 strait hours in seattle rain... thus far no fading or anything.
I believe paint thinner will take it of or acetone.

yea same, except mine dried for like 20 minutes lol. Im too too concerned about taking it off because I could just buy another light cover for backup if I need to sell it.

VHT I would classify as semi permanent: I doubt it would be 100% removable. But it looks super good if done right and if you want it to be more permanent it is recommended to use a fine sandpaper first. I didn't sand mine and they lasted perfectly fine this past winter, which was pretty bad. I didn't even do a clear coat yet because I kind of like the matte look. Do it, if you end up getting in trouble with the law or not liking it just buy some on ebay for $40-50 each and sell the tinted ones for the same or more.

Good call, carrera. I think clear coating would be a good way to add protection. If sanding, what grit?

Yeah, mine were sanded. Then applied, then cleared, then wet sanded, and polished for a factory finishl.
