Slid into a Snow Bank Last Night- FML

Driving to work yesterday the roads were jammed packed snow and the R did pretty well on that going moderately slow. Yesterday it had some time to melt and caused that deep slush that's just grabs your tires and pulls. I was only about 200 yards from my office last night and going down a hill into a slight left turn the car decided to go straight and act like a plow.
Image
The snow was so jammed underneath and in front of the tires it was like having cinder blocks in front of them. Some people stopped to help and I was able to get unstuck which was nice and only took like 30 mins.

Surprisingly there was not damage to the bumper or headlight. As for now it seems like the alignment is slightly out of whack I hope that's it. Who knows about the suspension though. Just venting my frustration over the 50+ inches of snow we received in the last few days. Cheers

Tell me about it.

The R barely ventured out in the snow for that reason. Despite having near bald tires (waiting for the wear bars to show so I can collect 40,000 miles worth of value on a 60,000 mile tread warranty) the MDX has been the winter vehicle of choice due to having more suspension travel.

Some jackass up the street from me decided to snowblow his driveway out into the street, so there's an 18" (no kidding) ridge of ice that's right in front of his house. The R can't handle a speedbump, much less that crap.

The last storm in Dec, some jackass in the other direction though it would be a good idea to shovel out his car by piling the snow in the middle of the street. So we had a 4' tall (no joke) island of snow in the middle of the road that you drove around for about 3 weeks.

No way I was taking out the R in these conditions. Look at what happened to Kanned....

I really wish I had a SUV. The R is my daily driver so there was no other choice. I can't even imagine the damage I am causing to under carriage of my car with the snow that has been accumulating between the tire tracks on the road. My mom was in the car with me last night commenting on all the noises of the snow hitting the underneath of the car.

The question begs to be asked....what tires????

If you grab a big rut, doesn't matter if you're on studded Hakkipettas. You're going where it's pointed...

Seriously...what's up with that? We haven't had near as much snow (around 20") but two guys at the entrance to our neighborhood think the street is their personal snow depository? WTF? Morons.

Big rut, deep slush, same difference.

Must be VA slang.

But, I know what you're saying...it can be scary especially if you're not used to driving in deep snow or slush...

Call and complain you can get ticketed for leaving snow in the road

:

Against the law in Massachusetts to shovel or blow snow into the road/street. As a plow owner you also cant push piles across the street either. Doing this leaves a ridge of snow and if a car hits it they might crash or spin out. I still see idiots do this and Boston is really the only place Ive seen enforce the fine.

Come down to VA where they can't plow. They think you can plow a 40' wide street using a 3/4 ton pickup and a plow for a driveway....

I moved to the "south" from NY to escape this crap, not hone my inner Petter Solberg.

Re: (Needsdecaf)

I was lucky yesterday commutting into work and the R was had no problems getting through 3-4" of packed ICE/SNOW and slush in my town, on HWY 195 (NJ) and the awful roads of the Greater Trenton Area; There was no way I was going to venture down to Camden to my main office. Love my Michelin Pilot Sport A/S+ tires

Re: (PureDrive07)

I had to drive through about 5 - 8 inches of slushy snow to work. Several unsettling moments. Conti Extreme Contacts AW. Good tread left. I was driving veerrryy slowly but a lot of slipping and fishtailing. (AWD is just fine. I had to put my wife in the driver's seat and push the R free and the rear wheels were spinning just fine). Then, when I got to work I noticed that the snow had knocked the driver's side front bumper out of its track so the front side of the bumper was sticking out. The front bumper is so low, it was probably plowing the snow and the left side just gave way. I was able to snap it back in but it is likely to pop out at the drop of a hat now. You can still see a larger gap than on the right side. You guys are very smart to go with the family SUV. Too bad for me the R is my DD.

Re: (MJVolvo)

Mehh

Some of you guys are sounding like wussies.

I'm driving my lowered R in Calgary. Here we can get weeks of deep snow and a Municipality that doesn't plow residential areas -- only main roads.

Buncha wussies

Goodyear Egle GT- All Seasons....not that great!

Well that's your problem right there - crappy tires for those conditions. Rubber would have been frozen also.

Sorry to hear about your damage though.

Re: (S60inToronto)

^^^

Thatsa great point.
All seasons are just brutal on the S60R -- I had a set on mine when I got it and almost kissed a curb or two. I think the weight of the car and the all seasons are oil and water.

Well over here in WA we haven't gotten snow this year at all, not ONE bit. Quite balmy over here.
Oh and yeah I realize I'm in the R forum.

It has snowed in every state except for Hawaii this year, yes even Florida. Somewhere in your state it snowed

The R is good in snow with Blizzack LM25' snows. The chunks of frozen snow still bang it around over 60mph. If you don't mind correcting all the time you could maintain 75mph on snow covered roads here in new england. I tried all season radials in a blizzard my computer went into limp mode. Not to mention it wouldn't steer or stop. Never again.
Hey why did you steal all our snow.

hey my local volvo dealer is offering a 4 wheel alignment for $102. That seems like a pretty good deal. You should check to see if this is a Volvo offer. Sometimes those coupons are good everywhere. I'm still holding out for the $150 brake deal myself.
