Does anyone else notice that the CD player skips over bumps from time to time? It does not happen that often, but this is the first time I have a CD player and was wondering if this is normal behavior.

Jim,
I have the in-dash single CD player on my 2.4T. It has skipped maybe 2 or 3 times in almost 4500 miles of driving over some very bumpy and broken roads here in Denver. I don't know that it's normal, but it's only happened when the car encountered a REALLY severe jolt from the road surface. Otherwise, sound system is excellent!
Eric
I have the 803 radio with the 4 disk changer. It has skipped once or twice in 4K miles, but only over very bumpy terrain. My old Alpine changer (in the trunk of my old car) never ever skipped so that is my baseline. The new one overall is still not what I would consider bad.

I also have the 803 radio with the 4 disk changer and I experienced skipping problems right from the start. In fact, the roads in Greece are on average more bumpy than what you guys are used to, so it is an annoying problem... The dealer said they couldn't reproduce the problem. But, overall, the sound system has exceeded my expectations

I'm pretty sure that in dash units are usually more succeptible to skipping than trunk-mounted units. I have the in-dash and cd changer in my S60, and haven't had a problem with either.

Dear all,
I have a HU-803 with 4-CD changer and a Premium Audio system worth some USD 1500 ...
...
Skipping is COMMON - that is it's relatively imune to bumps (and in Romania we DO have quite a few bumps ...) but ANY acceleration in the horisontal plane, such as braking, cornering with enthusiastic speed and somewhat less accelerating will send my 'Premium' audio system skipping
This is what I would mildly call UNACCEPTABLE in an audio system with this kind of price tag. Volvo should use a buffered memory player with some 10 seconds of buffering - this is common in portables, but seems to have been forgotten in the 803.
Otherwise, the sound is AWESOME ...
Please, Volvo, do something about it ... !

Dog,
After some additional impromptu testing this weekend, I can confirm that it is not so much bumps that cause the unit to skip, but rather, lateral acceleration with bumps. Actually, I might take this as an early warning sign that my DSTC is about to kick in :) Seriously though, I don't find the problem pronounced, but agree that buffering would probably mitigate it.

It usually skips in the middle of a bumpy turn. At least I know I am not alone with this and am not really going to worry about it in light of everything else going on the world right now.
Thanks,
Jim

I've got the 10 disc changer in the trunk of my S60 and it seems to be fine, FWIW.
Although I don't use it much, seeing as how it was a freebie as a part of the AOL promo with the launch of the car and I normally don't buy those kinds of things. But when it's free, what the heck. I think it's something like an $800 or so add-on if the dealer installs it. Sounds like that may be the way to go instead of the HU-803 if you drive a lot on bumpy roads. . .
