Hi all-
New member here, looking to get a used (2007 or later) XC90 for my wife, and I have a few basic questions...
First, between the SI6 and the B8444S engines, is one more reliable and/or more well respected on this list? (By the way, I have done enough reading to know about the reputation of the T6 tranny problems, so am not looking at the B6294T engine.)
Second question: I am a somewhat mechanical and would like to be able to do basic fixes myself. Is either of these engines (SI6 vs B8444S) notably easier to work on than the other? e.g. Serpentine, water pump, spark plugs?
Next... it looks to me like both engines are transversely mounted... does this make access to things like serpentine, plugs, etc difficult?
Bear in mind that I am coming from the BMW world (98 E36 M3 and 00' 323i daily driver) and am used to longitudinal mounted engines that make doing most things under the hood a snap... so I want to make sure that I ask the right questions about choosing an engine that is easy (or as easy as possible) to work on.
Lastly, I'll admit that I was really excited to find this forum! I am active on the BMW equivalent, (bimmerforums) so I know how helpful this kind of trading of ideas and experiences can be.
Thanks ahead of time,
dan
