Hello folks, I have a new problem with my R, and was hoping someone could help. In any gear, and at any speed, the R will shudder once boost climbs. It's ok if Im very gentle on the throttle, or if RPMs are so low that its not making that much boost. But, once revs rise and it starts making boost (i'd say no more than 1/2 boost) it will shudder/stutter very badly. No codes & no smoke, so I'm pretty sure it's not a coil or plug, because I should get a "misfire on cylinder x" if that were the case (I think). So, being that there is no CEL, could this be the fuel pressure sensor? Would that sensor not throw a code if it was bad?
2004, 77k miles, fuel pressure sensor recall was done years ago, by previous owner.
tia,
Joe

Could be the FPS. Mines failed twice in 12k.... go Volvo!
(misfire code only 1 of the 2 times, and only after months of misdiagnosing. So a code is not required for this to be the problem.)

Re: Shudder/stutter under boost (xman03)

IPD HD TCV already installed. This problem started after a high-speed run. I will swap in my factory tcv tonight, but I would imagine the IPD unit (if working properly, and it has been) should be ok...
This is a very dramatic stutter. but, I was getting a hiccup in the powerband since last week. I tried to adjust the wastegate rod, and the lock nut had come loose and the rod readjusted itself to 0 psi. I thought I had that fixed, but like I said, then I started noticing a single hiccup under accel. So, if the FPS would def throw a code, and the tcv is good (will confirm tonight), what could this be?
:: edit :: So the FPS might *not* throw a code? Anybody have the part# handy for the FPS?

Re: Shudder/stutter under boost (JoeLvo)

someone feel free to correct me, but the CEL will only come on if you have emission related problems, there are myriad other codes that could be stored, but can only be read by volvo ( or a can enabled OBD reader)

IMO no CEL =/= no codes

Re: Shudder/stutter under boost (FEO)

Ok, good point FEO.
Knowing that a failed FPS will cause this type of issue, I think I'm willing to throw this one part at it, if everything else is ok (hoses, wastegate rod). Hopefully someone knows the FPS part# because I can't find it by name/description on myswedishparts.

Ill will amend my above statement:
Its failed twice, I got a CEL once (after misdiagnosing a few times). The second time, no CEL.
BOTH TIMES HAD CODES which required a dealer read, not CEL's.

Double check everything you've touched recently. Since you've been tweaking, its likely something's probably loose not broken....

If you can, stop by a dealer and have your DTCs read. Might shine some light.

Re: (S60R1)

I would actually love to do that, but I cringe at the thought of having to drop my car off and be without wheels for days while they get around to it. I will see if a local dealership will do it when I bring it in, and not have me "leave it with them". Wish we could read codes without the dealer.

Another SS member lives nearby and has the IPD diagnostic tool
I will be scanning the R tonight to see what, if anything, has been stored. Re: (SHIFT_S60R)

I just recently replaced my plugs (within 5000 miles) with OEM plugs. I checked the gap and they were all correct (forgot the spec now). *BUT* I did not use a torque wrench when tightening the plugs. I have to say, the R ran like a champ after the plug change. I'm sure that doesn't mean much, but it ran perfectly fine until Saturday night (Upon restarting Sunday morning, I noticed the shudder). In deference to forum rules, I will just say that Saturday night involved high RPM in 6th gear, for a somewhat extended period of time. I will check the plugs, and do them right this time (I was spending $$ on OEM parts at the time to try to cure cylinder misfires, and just couldn't swing the $ for a torque wrench worth owning, obviously a lapse in judgment).
So, Stoyan (EAX) was kind enough to plug in his data-logger, and go for a drive with me. I have quite a bit of data that I am graphing up now, and will post. Stoyan, looks like we're going to have a spark-plug party
Thanks for the continued input
