Hi guys, im kind of in a tough spot right now and want opinions. I am a 19 year old college student. i bought a car for college since it is a very far drive and it was nice to have one to get to the store and stuff. This summer im having real trouble finding a job, like everyone else and I am making no money. Im kind of on the fence if i should keep or sell my car. Its a 2001 S60 auto with 101k miles on it. New tires, new timing belt and all fluids changed. WIll need brakes kind of soon but that is something need to consider. I had posted my car on craigslist just to see if i could get any hits and I have one guy who might want to buy my car. He said he wants to look at it this week and make a purchase this week. Ive talked to him on the phone and I can arrange to meet with him wednesday. I was asking $7k for the car but we are at $6500 which is what he wants to offer. My question is, is it worth keeping the car or selling? Im just not sure if it will financially be worth keeping. I am just worried i might need a trans soon down the line or something else since the miles are getting up there and i wont be able to afford a huge bill if it comes along

Re: Should i sell my car? (rgl133)

I feel that, thats half the reason i no longer have my S60 (and because i wanted an 850 ), i do have a job now though. in your situation though, 6500 may help but i would try and hold on, i got a little over 10 for mine and thats the only reason i let the deal happen, you have to balance what the car is worth to you long term and if you can bear being broke a while longer, good luck whatever you decide!!

6500 is fair for your car and then some. Honestly if it is just for college get yourself a 3k civic.

ya i mean on the one hand i love the car. I get so many compliments from people. Although its annoying to own the car because everyone thinks im rich (they dont realize the car is 8 years old) and im flat broke. i guess im just worried about major repair bills close down the road, compared to having no car or a car that wouldnt cost so much to get fixed

Re: (rgl133)

That's a very good price for the car (if the offer is for reals).
Financially it might make sense to downgrade now, but appearances matter when you're looking for a job. You will make a better impression showing up in a washed and waxed Volvo than a beater Civic.
I have a view from my office to our parking lot, and I do see if a guy I just interviewed leaves in a clunker, if he lights up a cig, or some such. It should not matter, but it's part of an overall impression.

I would keep it.
Honestly, what else are you going to get for 6500? Most likely someone elses crap thats been beaten on and abused. If you've cared and maintained it well you shouldnt have anything to worry about. Roll to school in style and keep the volvo

Id keep it,
Look at it this way, you've maintained it, Sounds like its trouble free until you have to do brakes.
- Have you noticed any transmission slipping?
But at the same time its just gonna keep depreciating.
Re: (Cjones16)

there may be a slight tranny slip which is the only thing i am worried about. although this is only the second auto ive ever driven so im not sure exactly what a tranny slip is. It just seems sometimes when shifting to take a little longer than it should, kind of sluggish maybe? not too sure

you will need to replace the tranny sooner rather than later, an 01 at 100k? You aren't on borrowed time yet, but you are getting there.

Re: (Bender)

ya i just got the stop neutral feature removed and the TCM updated and the car has much better switch points and seems even faster than it was before. I am still stuck on what to do. I need a car to last me the next 4 years and I am not sure if i should stick with the Volvo or buy a cheaper car and keep the rest of the money i make from the volvo in case something goes wrong

Re:

Every car can have it's issues, or can be that 'gem'.
I've had funner, newer, and more expensive cars then my 01 auto NA, but not one of them had this level of class
But if you have your concerns about the reliability of your S60 or the long term value, then take the offer you have in front of you. Really, you can find older (aka: more garage mechanic friendly) sporty cars for a fraction of the cost. Won't be as good looking as your volvo, but won't be settling with a civic either
Put alot of thought into it.
I got out of an almost brand new truck payment, and over payed for my s60, so upgrading isn't an option for a while for me.
I look back years ago and miss my old cars that were paid for and easy to wrench on, but I'm enjoying what I have now.

Re: (Turbos60)

ya i mean i know i wont be able to get anything near as nice but I am only in college so being broke is part of the college experience. I am just afraid that if something goes I wont have the money to fix it. Because as of now, i have no money.

unfortunately, the school I go to does not think you go "broke," apparently, everyone is supposed to live off of trust funds and drive black Range Rovers or Porsche Cayenne, I have a chick friend who drive a Mercedes SL55
