Hi,
I have a "unique opportuity". My son backed into a 83 240 Coupe that a guy is getting ready to sell. We owe him $750 for that, no argument there. He is willing to sell the car for $1,700. It's got a stick, 160K, A/C, no sunroof, white, bad left front fender and partilally damaged grill, and a very small dent (negligible) from my son hitting it. Original owner, inside pretty good (bad door panels and loose trim). Seems to drive okay, may be clutch time soon. I would either buy it for my son to drive (to replace the gas-hog Bronco) or buy to resell to offset the lost of $750. In reality, I'm buying the car for an additional $950.
Any thought?
Thanks,
Biederboat

Without seeing the car...it's hard to say...but I would say in decent shape @$1k is about all I would offer. If it needs body work..clutch...and probably belts/hoses..and who knows what else....brakes? Trans flush? radiator flush?..... It could be more of a project then you think!
Now if you were going to restore it and not drive it...which would not really be smart since an 83 coupe is not a collectors cars...but IF that is what you want to do...then paying a little more won't hurt!
IMO...you would be better of looking for a 90-93 240 with some miles and getting a car that would last a little longer than the 83. ...IF that is what you want. Or are you just considering this as a solution to the damage your son caused? If that is the case..............I would say it's a tossup!
I remember my dad had an old 1979 Big Bronco with a 351W motor in it. That thing was a beast. Had 320K miles on it with the original drivetrain. I'd say keep the Bronco if it's paid for. They are durable, and the gas mileage isn't that bad if you're careful with it. Buying an old car is usually not a good idea in my book.

I remember my IM saying, "Old Volvos are good kid cars. They ain't fast, so its hard to get in trouble. If they do get in trouble, its a Volvo".
I know when my brother sold his 84 244 with about 300k on it, the buyer was going to give it to her son to drive to college. She felt that if it kept her son safe thru college, she would gladly throw it away upon graduation and buy him a new car.
