I'm thinking about getting my first Volvo. I've found a pretty nice looking 850 Turbo Wagon at a local dealer. I recently changed jobs which puts me in rush hour traffic in Atlanta, so the 5spd in the ol' CRX has gotta go. The Wagon has about 95K on it, should I be worried about maintenance issues with the turbo? What about transmission problems? Any advice is certainly appreciated. I'll probably drive over to see the car today during lunch....
Thanks!
Greg

95K is about when a couple big items go out.
Rear main seal just went out on mine at about 98k or 99k. That is a 1000 dollar job...I did it myself with the help of a friend and his garage/lift at 100K
Also, suspension is another big issue at this mileage. This can be good considering you can now upgrade to stiffer springs and shocks.
Exhaust piping should be checked.
Anything else guys?
Just be sure to check ALL maintenance records, and check the engine for any codes. Test drive it, and abuse it. Drive it like you're trying to break it (almost). That way, you can see/feel/hear anything that's wrong.

What do u mean by rear seal? Our turbo wagon has about 124,000+ on it, and we get lots of vibrations from the road now, and it gets kinda loud when we reach 85Mph on up.
Also, the exhaust fumes are too viewable for my liking, and we did blow a head gasket earlier with the car, but at lower RPM's the car sounds kinda funny, like more rough, it's hard to explain, but the car still runs very well.....

The turbo should be no problem.
Around 100k you're probably going to watn to look at ball joints/a frame (as with any car). For the 850 100k could mean transmission PNP switch, check to see that the AC blows cold and works properly (evaporator failure is common and expensive to fix).

The 850 Turbo Wagon is a great car, my first car, its awsome. The A/C, like the other guy said can go bad, mine had a bad C/V joint at 95K, the ABS modulator stoped working at about 90K. Sometimes when its raining I will go through a puddle and all the warning lights will come on. Other than that, its a great car.

Definitely do a engine compression test. My experience is the valves start sticking open around 140,000 miles and thus lose compression, making for harder cold starts and ultimately non-starts and obviously reduced performance.

Wow. You guys kinda beat your cars J/K
100K (in kilometers) is time for major service such as timing belt and everything changed, I still have my original suspension at nearly 200K (still works ok, dosen't oscilate, although something stiffer next year would be nice.
No major failures ever. Next spring I'm going to change the timing belt, all fluids, have everything looked at.
We have a '94 T-5 five speed in the driveway too although it isn't mine. My roomate bought it this year at around 130K (km again) and it needed about 2 grand in work to bring it back from neglected to an awesome 850 again. He needed a new clutch, exhaust hangers, rad, headlight wiper fixed/adjusted, brakes and some other things I don't quite remember right now. He bought it certified too(!) kinda scary.

I've decided to cool my jets and try to squeeze a few more miles out of the CRX until at least Spring 2003. She's got 251K on her now, hoping I can make it to 275K or so. I will definitely keep the 850 sedan and wagon on my short list.
Thanks for all the responses.
Greg
