Hello, My wife and I are consirdering purchasing a 2k S70 T-5 but are concerned w/ it's problematic history. I would like to hear any suggestions on this topic and would appreciate the brutal truth.
Thanks, Shey
[This message has been edited by gladstone17 (edited 09-29-2001).]

Shey,
As a very new S70 owner I can only address the "brutal truth" very briefly but I am very happy with my "new" car overall. Ours is a GLT and is a used '98 so perhaps the things you were concerned about wouldn't apply for me but so far the car has been great. I have only a few thousand miles on the car since we bought it used but I am happier with the car now than when I bought it. At this point I am enjoying the car enough that even if I have to go to aftermarket brake rotors and pads to get decent life I will be glad to. That seems to be the worst thing I may have to do and at this point I haven't driven it enough to see if that will be the case.
About 1 in 5 times that I drive it I have felt a little "stumble" at idle. It lasts about 1 second. I haven't even talked to the Volvo folks yet (hey, I haven't even complained about it online) since it has been so minor and not a problem.
Oh, I forgot, I leave the windows down when it is in the garage as the leather just has too much "scent" but leaving the windows down lets it air out enough keep the "scent" down. There, that's the brutal truth....
I hope I didn't come off as too much of a drooling Volvo fanatic!
Eric

Don't buy a new one, buy my 98 T5 5 speed!
I've had no problems with mine, and it's got twice the normal mileage as other 98's, runs like a dream...

Well, I had the S70 in for it's first real visit to the shop. Dealer did a software upgrade for the stumble at idle. They also did a recall on the turn signals and bulbs, which I had not had problems with. They also replaced a sun visor that would not retract completely with a new one.
I was told that the brake pads and rotors that are installed on the car are actually aftermarket items. I have gotten an occasional squeal with light braking. This car "rocks" to a stop like none other I have driven with normal braking. Instead of one rock it will rock back and forth about 3 times. Not violent or anything but it surprises you the first time or two. I will have to try and find out what brand of pads and rotors are on it.
The actual problem I took the car in for was that the drivers door "snubber" came loose where it attaches to the car frame. It needs to be welded back but the guy that does the welding is on vacation now so I will have take it back later. It makes the most obnoxious double popping sound complete with a spring "sproing" sound when the door is opened. I was told that they had seen this on some older 850's but not on newer S70's. Hmmmm...
Other than this door problem that is known and should be a very straightforward fix the car continues to be very nice to drive (and own). Volvo of Charlotte provided shuttle service to and from my home so my wife could avoid taxi duty and they have taken care of all of this under warranty with no cost to me.
Eric
