I took the car in for a crunch into 2nd, and they upgraded the cables, spring pin, and gear selector lever - it made a huge difference. The shifter now feels much more direct (albeit a bit more rubbery in neutral), and goes into gear smoothly. There is no vibration through the shifter now, at any engine speed.
I also noticed that the upper engine mount was getting cracked, and they replaced the old round mount with this:

It appears to be a new mount, and the car is much smoother with this mount. Shifting is better, with much less effort required to shift smoothly, and there is less vibration through the wheel and chassis (referencing when my engine mount was not broken).
The part # for the mount is: 30680770

Why not just get the Evolve or IPD/Powerflex bushing? Supposedly lasts forever.

That seems to be gone now that the new cables and engine mount are in. Interestingly though, I now experience a bit of turbo overrun when upshifting at high rpm now, and this wasn't there before.
I never got a clunk going into second, but I did have a nasty drive line lash clunkiness when stepping on the clutch during engine braking in 1st. That seems to be reduced as well.
As for the evolve mount, my dealer is extremely mod-unfriendly. They've been pretty good in other areas so I'll try something like that post warranty, if I keep the car. Now though, I'd have to change back to the old mounting arm to get a round bushing in there it seems.....

I have an infrequent crunch going into second from 1st under hard acceleration as well (NOT speed-shifting). Is the upgrade only for 04s?
TIA,
Derek
I wouldn't go in and just ask for the cable upgrade though - tell them you're getting a buzz in the shifter in 5th, and that there is a crunch in 2nd (mine was quite bad). If you just go in to ask for the upgrade they probably won't do it, as they have to log a reason for the repair.
Eli and John are outstanding guys. I would definitely say they are mod friendly but they are clear to point out that warranties are voided with mod's. I don't press the issue, I just ask that they are fair if a problem arises and that is what we all agree on.
The problem is that it is not their call if an issue arises, it is up to the regional rep. I have met him and he seems to be a nice guy but I am not expecting him to be copasetic to any problems that arise from mod's. He is a business man and with mod's you have to pay to play, as is said over and over around here.

But some dealers seem much more reluctant to deal with mods at all. My dealer was quite adamant when I asked them about springs - they wouldn't even touch them. You would think they would want the paid work.
Tampa Volvo seems a bit more realistic. This isn't to say that if you have them install a set of eibachs, and you later have a problem with the shocks or the 4C, that they will fix everything with no problems. But at least they will install them, something my dealer wouldn't do. My dealer almost implied that putting a set of springs on the car would void my entire warranty (which it doesn't), and I really don't want to deal with that hassle. I can't see the guys at Tampa Volvo giving you trouble if your ECU happened to go bad, after you installed a set of springs.

so when i go to make a service appointment at Volvo of Tampa, should i say i'm having a buzzing sound in 5th gear and ask if it's covered under warranty? orlando to tampa is an hour or so away, and i don't want to have to pay for this buzzing fix. if i do i'll just live with it.

Re: Shifter cable upgrade and new engine mount (mike_c70)

While the TNN doesn't address the crunch into second, I think this is probably the cause. missaligned cables can cause gear crunch, and these new cables fixed the problem completely for me. Telling them your car buzzes to get the crunch fixed might be a little dirty, but if it fixes the problem without them having to tear your tranny apart, then it's worth it. The new mount might also have helped the situation as well, as my old mount was probably moving a bit.
One thing that still bugs me though, is the open gate in the shift pattern. I hate missing 5th because the shifter moves too far to the right. The new cables (and shift lever) didn't seem to deal with this problem at all.
