My wifes 2003 S60 was surging when shifting between 1st and second, usually on a downshift or anytime when shifting under load. I talked to IPD and ordered a replacement torque mount and found that the smaller bushing on the installed torque mount was toast. Drove it around and had no problems. Then this afternoon my wife ran some errands, got the car good and warmed up and it started to surge/jump when downshifting around 10-20mph.
So a couple thoughts. The mechanic noticed at the 105k service (done at 115k opps) that the right front motor mount is collapsed. He also commented that the 120k service calls for a trans flush.
Also the CV boot on the right side is torn.
So where to next repair wise? Order the mount and get that in in the next week or so, or flush the trans asap?
Or something else?

Re: "Shift surge" on lowspeed downshift - Automagic trans (volvostud)

I have this same issue. My indy mechanic thinks it might be the blow off valve in the turbo. The dealership thinks it might be the tranny ($$). I wish I could narrow it down without spending a ton of money on it. Let me know if you find anything.
Rob

This is your TRANSMISSION and has nothing to do with torque mounts, etc.
unless they're completely shot.
Repair any broken mounts and see what happens. If no better.....
Flush the transmission, install the latest software, reset the adaptors, do (or have done) a correct drive cycle....and pray!

Re: "Shift surge" on lowspeed downshift - Automagic trans (robreed55)

So this weekend I did a fluid flush, 12qts. Shifting is noticeably smoother, though there is still a slight issue when it downshifts from 2 to 1.
When I manually shift I can make is shift smoothly and when I drive it and slowly decellerate things are fine. But when my wife drives it and brakes quicker, followed by more quickly accelerating it clunks from 1 to 2.
So it sounds like a computer check is next on the list. Is there an option that doesn't involve going to a shop and forking over a bunch of money?
Any other thoughts? I still have to replace the front right motor mount.

Your mechanic said it was a blow off valve? Bring the car to him, and have him point you to where the blow off valve is.

Re: "Shift surge" on lowspeed downshift - Automagic trans (volvostud)

I was driving this weekend and actually found the downshift problem to be from third to second. Right before the normal surge speed I switched into manual shift mode and found myself to actually be in 3rd.
I'm thinking I need to go get the computer checked. I'd love to know what they actually test, if the computer would actually be registering a fault for something like this, if there are known updates, and lastly what it typically costs for something like this.

Since you have already flushed you need to get any and all upgraded software, reset the adaptors, have the drive cycle performed and try it.
(You waited FAR too long to flush it, hopefully it's OK.)

Re: "Shift surge" on lowspeed downshift - Automagic trans (JRL)

Hi, first post,
read this string with interest as my '01 S60 has a similar issue that has surfaced in the last couple of months, the tranny 'bangs'/'thumps' into gear after slowing down. ie turning a corner, and then accelerating. doesn't matter if it is done softly, or through to hard acceleration...same 'bang' when it engages.
Have found a manual downshift usually eases the engagement... like the tranny can not decide which gear it should be in...
BTW Volvo services have been done by dealer since new, but cant remember for sure if / when the tranny fluid was changed.

Q...what are the 'adaptors' and 'drive cycle' mentioned in the previous post?
thanks
Eric
