Interesting how I was thinking about that today.

Perhaps he wants to optimize fuel economy?

you're not sure when to shift?

Okay guys here's the thing, I am an old drag race guy and being consistent is key. A shift light gives you consistency and as noted before you do not have to take your eyes off the road/track when your hammer down. I did contact Auto Meter and they had to look up the schematic for our cars, it can be done but not real easy. Here is what Auto Meter had to say on the install:

We have not done one of these here, but looking over the wiring diagrams for your car, it is possible with a little work. You'll need to use a 9117 tach adapter to get a proper tach signal due to the distributorless ignition system. This is installed by wiring the adapter in series with the power supply for all of the ignition coils. From there, you will have a 2.5 ppr tach signal that can be read by any of the shift light modules (like the 5312). This will process the engine rpm signal and complete the circuit to light the 5330 shift light when the rpm level reaches the level you set. Hope this helps, please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Best regards,

Please don't put a shift light on your practically stock engine. Put it in that beautiful SS, Actually, I'd love to see pictures of it.

Stock or not knowing when your at peak power and then shift to stay in that power band is what the light is truly for, and yes I do have a shift light in the Camaro. Here are a couple pics as requested:

Your reply from Autometer is promising, but sounds like a lot of work.

I remember at the track that I would stare at the tach more than I wanted. I remember on one run that for some reason I had a retarded moment and I stared at the tach from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. I remember looking up in 3rd gear at the strip and I thought to myself "awesome, I am still going straight."

Thank you

Yup.

Its a race car, since when I put on the helmet, All I can see is the mirrors, the spedo, the tach, and the people behind me.

Seems race car enough.

I am going to follow up with Auto Meter and see what they say about installing it. It does sound like a lot of work but oh well.

I'm down for a parts order, as well as guinea pig too. The wiring doesn't seem too far fetched for me.

If I can get a wiring diagram from them I will pass it along and we can give it a try. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Seems easy Page 4.

Top of it shows something similar to ours.

If there is a wire that is common to all the coil packs which is its power supply. THat is the one that needs to be interrupted and wired into the 9117 Tach adaptor.

The other wires will be Switched power ( + 12 v ), Ground (negative / black) and the output to whatever shift light used.

Then after that we can use any autometer shift light.
