We just received a letter from Volvo regarding my wife's XC60: "Volvo has identified that the AWD function in your Volvo my gradually degrade over time due to a software calculation issue. This condition may result in a gradual reduction in torque available to the rear wheels. The corrective action is to perform a software upgrade to the Differential Electronic Module (DEM)". That is a direct quote from the letter and it refers to all 2013-2015 S60, XC60, V60,S80, and XC70 vehicles. The fix it to contact the dealer for a software upgrade. They also allude to some parts that are needed.
Anyone else receive this love note from Volvo?

Recieved said love note yesterday, will call today to book appointment.

My letter also came with a nice coupon good for $x off or rubber floor mats, cross bars or roof box.

Nice touch!

Had this done to my car too, couldn't tell any difference, but didn't hurt anything either. I would just wait until the next scheduled service instead of making a special trip.

Received said letter yesterday as well, my initial thought "They're going to reduce my rear wheel tq!!". As I thought more about it, there will be little missed from this software update. I did not receive any coupon as well!

After a couple of months driving the only thing I have noticed is deceleration speed when I take my foot off the gas.
What about the deceleration did you notice?

Have not received notification yet but great to know. Thanks for posting!

Had the software update done before a road trip to Oregon after the wife's less than impressive experiences with traction in deep snow a year ago. Didn't have deep snow, but enough to coat everything plus freezing rain and the XC60 handled it all perfectly. Felt much more stable than the mk 1 Haldex in an Audi TT.

I took my car in for the 1st service maintenance two weeks ago. I was not told or my dealer did not write anything about recall on the sheet. It just had
'complimentary software updates' with no specific details along with the oil change info. I might have to give them a call to find out. BTW, 2015.5 is affected by this? OP mentioned 2013-2015 YM.

My wife's notice does not mention the 2015.5 specifically, just says 2013-2015. They give a phone #, 800-458-1552, to call with any questions. You might try that.

I'm completely new to all this. We received this love letter a couple days back. Now, what I'm wondering is, could this calculation mistake eventually lead to different tire usage? Our back tires are pretty run down while the front tires are still fairly good. All 4 tires have been on the car since we purchased it, not one was replaced. I wondered why they would run down so different but didn't get an answer at our last service.
So, since they say that this will be covered under warranty, will they replace my tires for free as well, if this issue led to different tire usage? Does anyone have advice or even experience with this?

Our late mk1 Audi TT with an earlier Haldex did much the same, ate rear tires at a rate of 2 to 3x the fronts which made no sense on what is essentially a FWD car. Blamed the alignment though multiple shops couldn't fix it. It came off of the showroom floor so I couldn't point to earlier accident damage. Our XC60, on the other hand has been more or less equal front to rear. I rotate the tires regularly which does help.

I'd have the alignment checked.

Had update done Friday. Car definitely seems to "squat" more off the line, indicating a noticeable shift towards rear bias. Fine by me!!! :)

Had my update done at the beginning of March everything seemed fine. However, I tried to use my paddle shifters to change gear today (something I haven't done in a long time) and they don't work. Does anyone who has had this service update done, have paddle shifters, if so, do they still work?

Differential Electronic Module Failure/Service Campaign S49642

Question for you all -

On 3/21/16 I took my 2015 XC60 R-Design with (then) 57K miles (7K out of warranty) to the dealer with an "AWD Disabled, Service Required" error on the dash. The DEM pump had to be replaced (filter was plugged?) and they performed the software upgrade in SC S49642 to the tune of $750. THEN, on 3/28 (one week later) I get the letter for SC 49642 referring to the AWD degradation issue due to software.

Not one to believe in coincidences, I'm wondering if - had the software change been done before - the DEM pump would not have failed when it did. I've taken my car to this dealership since new for all maintenance.

Thoughts? Any Volvo mechanics out there with an opinion on this? What does "AWD function in your Volvo may gradually degrade over time..." mean?

Thanks for your time - I love my car but just not sure the dealership is on the up-and-up on this one.

Ron

Yes, have paddle shifters. Actually asked dealer to replace shifters at the same appointment as they have become sporadic in their response. Occasionally on both up shifts and downshifts you have to tap twice. Dealer did a transmission software update as a "remedy" in lieu of replacing the paddles. No noticeable changes...they still "function" after the service campaign, but the software update on the trans didn't fix the sporadic response either. Will take it back in and ask for new paddles.

Maybe this SC linked with this problem with haldex 5?

Like this (AOC pump):

14.600 km (MY15):

We saw this problem from MY13 to MY15 (XC60/XC70, all with Haldex 5)
If you see message "AWD Disabled", then possible (90%) this codes exists DEM-P188918, P188971. And, unfortunately, 80% after oil change you must change the haldex5 pump (if you don't have warranty - your money matters).

Sadly, but true :(

So is the the sludge clutch material? Does anyone know what they are changing here? Does this update fix the low speed shudder in a turn and the highway light throttle up a hill shudder? I am at 53K KM and do not want the AOC failing after 80 K on my dime

My wife's 2013 with 33000+ miles has always shifted hard when stopping then before coming to a complete stop, accelerating. It seems like it gets caught between shifts. For you that have had this update, does that solve that issue? Thanks

Dropped my '14 T6 off at the dealer this morning for some other things and they told me something puzzling. They don't see that this service was done on my car yet it's not showing up in their system as applicable to my car. Are they feeding me BS or what? I thought it was all AWD 2013-2015 XC60's?

#42 ·
In answer to my own question, the dealer thought they had provided the Polestar shifter tower They had actually supplied the older 2012 tower that does not support paddle shifters :( They are ordering the new tower which should fix the problem.

Anyone notice any changes on this update?

I just got mine Monday on my 50k mile service and seem to have lost my ability to light up my tires all the way to 40mph in sport mode and with DTSC off.

:(

Aren't you glad that your AWD is delivering power to the necessary wheels? Being able to light up the wheels up to 40mph sounds like the characteristic of a FWD or RWD car. Maybe I'm in the minority but I expect my awd to work seemlessly with minimal chirping at full lock.
