Anyone know about any service bulletins for the MY06 S60R? Specifically for the jumpy rear end and the missing in action bass of the HU850? (I'm sure this is all just wishful thinking). I know there's lots of talk about rear-end bushing replacements for the MY04 and MY05 but wonder if the MY06 needs any such thing.
I've got it in today to install some new Michelin PS2's so any quick answers would be helpful and much appreciated.
Thanks.
LTA

The rear control arm bushings are for mid-05's and back. The new bushings were put into production mid-05, and continue through the present models.
Bass -- it is what it is, sorry.
Quite frankly, the PS2's should eliminate most of your jumpy rear end issues. Also, lowering springs and sway bars completely eliminate those issues.

Even so, they are very, VERY accomodating and are working with me. I know that rear sway bar and bushing would probably do more than the tire swap and be cheaper but I just really love the PS2's. I will eventually do the rear sway bar.
As for the Hu850 bass problem. I'm going to push hard on this one with Volvo. I took some dB readings in my 02 with HU803. I plan to send them a spectrum graph of the HU803 vs. the HU850. They MUST be able to fix it. I already posted some info in the Tech forum.
Thanks again,
LTA
Thanks JRL. You too were very quick.
I just really love michelin PS2's and I know from all the postings here from you guys that they are a MUCH better 'match' for the R than the Rosso's.
Good thing is I found a local tire shop with many porsche owner customers and apparantly this size Rosso's is the OEM front tire on certain Porsches. They are ready to buy them from me. Also, my local Volvo tech is an R owner and likes to keep everything stock, he might be a good prospect. You would not believe how much more expensive tires are in Canada. I got my PS2's from Tire Rack (Oscar), I saved a ton!
Thanks again,
LTA
You would not believe that car does NOT have a subwoofer. I'm some what of an audiophiel and I can honestly say that Volvo did a FANTASTIC job on the HU803. I just don't get how they can come out with what they claim to be a better unit (HU850) with PLII and it so obviously sounds worse than the HU803. ps. Cranking the bass knob on the HU850 doesn't do it, the problem is bigger than that. There is the need for some serious work on it. If everything else is equal (speakers and amp) then the HU850 needs some serious DSP tuning and/or parametric equalization
.
You really need to spend time with an HU803 to apprecite the difference.
Gladly this new R offers SO MANY other advanteges and gains over my T5 that I can tolerate the bad HU850 for a while but I will definately push Volvo on this and I will post it all on the Tech forum.
LTA

Re: Service bulletins for MY06? (LTA)

My dealer thinks I'm for compaining about the sound, but the difference between the old HU-803 and the new HU-850 is drastic. At really loud volume, with a high quality CD, the HU-850 finally begins to sound good, but at normal listening levels it sounds completely flat to me.
Let me know if you're able to get anywhere with Volvo on this one. I would love an updated equilization file to restore the sound that I know is possible!

Why not just add an aftermarket subwoofer? I've built my own systems for many years in various cars and have had a 15" sub (one) since about '91 in every car. Sure, one can use smaller subs but I've never heard any OEM system with enough bass for me, not even in cars that cost about 100K where one might expect it.
IMHO, trying to get Volvo to improve bass in a stock system (IF like any other similar car, same model like another R) is like beating a dead horse.

I actually went looking for it. The 803 is a damn good factory stereo, but it really requires tweaking of the settings to get the most out of the sound, especially with low volume. It is very sensitive to the center speaker volume.

803 decent, 850 CRAP
Subs make a HUGE difference with ALL Volvo radios even the standard ones
It's a crime they never made (a plug and play) one for the S60

I'm wondering if the HU850 has them also. Assuming it's there, you may be able to ameliorate the bass, mid range and treble a bit.
Here is a link to the method of getting to the hidden menus on the HU803. Try it and see if it works on the 850.
http://s60r.fadainc.com/tips/A...s.pdf

Although, it may be that the activation sequence is simply different than the 803.
