Hey guys,
I have a 1998 V70 XC with 110,000 miles. All stock.
During engine startups, I would hear a fan come on for a short while and then turn off. I always assumed this was the Secondary Air Injection Pump that my Haynes repair manual talks about.
Well, now the fan is really, REALLY noisy and sounds like a bearing is going. Once the pump stops, the noise obviously stops, so the car still runs "fine" but I'd like to replace it.
1) Does it sound like I'm on the right track? (Secondary Air Injection Pump being the problem)
2) Can you tell me how to find it? From the grainy repair manual picture, I can tell the pump feeds an air manifold on the front of the engine. However, I can't seem to find the pump itself! It is after the air box, before the engine intake? Or further downstream? Is it under something that needs to be removed? Or is it in plain sight and I'm looking right at it?
3) Any helpful hints on performing this replacement?
Thanks for the help,
Kevin

It's right under your battery tray. Water gets in it from condensation via the SAS valve if it's faulty and begins to rust the motor's bearings. If it's not too far gone, the solution is to lube the bearings and drill 2 small holes from the bottom (under the car) into the fan's housing. Here is a write-up on an inexpensive replacement option: http://www.matthewsvolvosite.c...0.php

Re: (MadeInJapan)

Thanks! That was it exactly. I put in the new SAS valve (it was completely frozen) and a new air pump. The job was pretty easy save the front bolt for the SAS valve. Even using a stubby 10mm that was tough going.
Even with the VCOA discount the parts were surprisingly expensive ($450 for the two parts, + gasket and clamps) but the air motor is much, much quieter and manufactured in 10/2005 so hopefully those Swedes improved the design a bit.
Thanks for helping me out.
Kevin
