A 97 and I love this thing. Black with all the fixins. Power is quite nice. What performance modifications are available/recommended? Any performance websites? I looked into IPD briefly. Any noted problems with this vehicle? And is it an 850 or 854? What is the difference? What is the difference in sport/economy/winter modes when driving? Why do the front wheels stick out more than the rear? Is the fan supposed to stay on?

Re: Scooped up an 850R yesterday... (Oreganoflow)

Definitely get an exhaust, chip, and a K&N filter at a minuimun, with those you should be running around 275 to 300 hp. IPD is the most reliable and safe company out there, but also check BSR, Upsolute, Euro Sport Tuning, and Eastern Aerospace (just take their hp gains with a grain of salt). The only drawbacks I have had with my T-5R are it's FWD layout, torque steer sucks, and the auto tranny, it's too weak. I just had to shell out $2800 for a rebuilt tranny becuase I smoked the tires too much, can't help it in the rain or coming out of the corners. Your model is an 1997 854 R. 8 is for model series= 800, 5 is for the # of cylinders=5, and 4 is the number of doors. Ex. 850 R wagon is reffered to as an 855 R. The transmission modes vary the shift points when accelerating. I believe mine upshifts at something like 5000 rpms in economy, and 6000 rpms in sport, it holds the gear longer to gain more power. The front tires do stick out more (ie look aggressive), don't know why the rears don't but I don't like it. I am currently looking into some rear spacers to make the car look more impressive from the rear. And that fan you hear is the cooling system, it is normal to hear it, and if you don't hear it after driving hard then there is a problem. Congratulations and enjoy your R!

[Modified by 850 t-gul, 5:42 PM 1-3-2003]

Re: Scooped up an 850R yesterday... (Spearzy)

I noticed it does warm up rather fast. My car is currently at the dealer with a main seal leak and a stuck thermostat. Thank goodness for the warranty. Welcome to Volvo huh? Its cool. I'm having them do the timing belt also as I now have 71k on this thing. The remote start thing, I don't know what to say. Thats all over and done with.
