They suck, buy an R.

Only kidding. I had a 2001 XC70 that had over 200k. The trans was on the way out, it needed new lower control arms and suspension bits and the ETM went out after a year. I bought it for $3200 and sold it for $4000 two years later. Luckily I was able to save the trans with a software update and a couple flushes. I still really loved that car. It hauled my family and dogs and a ton of gear over the mtn pass countless times. It was also probably better in the snow than any other car I've owned including my current R and XC90.

So if your budget it $7k or under go for the newest year but don't be so worried about the mileage. Try and find one with a good service history too.
