Yesterday coming back from the Easter Sierras along hwy 395 I saw an incoming volvo sedan with a V8 badge on front grill, no license plates and the car looks brand spanking new. It happened so fast that I wasn't able to check in-time.
Is that a distributor's vehicle with the new V8 in the hood? Are we looking at a S60 V8 for 2007?

Who knows? 395 is "on the way" to Death Valley and also not a bad way to get south to Volvo's proving grounds in Phoenix. Could be a test S80.

I didn't get a glimpse of the tail because I was driving 80+ mph and the car whistled by, but from what I saw it was a brand new vehicle with wider stance and meaner look. that V8 badge I saw was real for sure.
the car looked a tad bigger than S60 it seems...

Re: Saw the V8 S60 (MagoonR)

There are several S80 V8's running around Phoenix and the surrounding area.
They drive past the store every couple of days or so.
Volvo DID have an S60 V8 test vehicle running around some time ago.

It was the brand new high performance S60R V8 Eddie Bauer Edition. Volvo engineers looked over the car and decided that the P2 chassis badly needed an additional 300 pounds up front to net a massive additional 20hp. Got linked here and just wondered why you guys want a V8 so bad. Were talking Ford V8s, not BMW V8s.

I had heard differently:
Perhaps for marketing reasons, Volvo officials in this country have resisted acknowledging that the engine is a reworked version of the V-8 designed by Ford and built by Yamaha that once powered the Taurus SHO in the mid-'90s. Maybe the word synergy has lost its buzz value with marketers, but that's where the engine's basic architecture originated, and indeed, the XC90 V-8s will be built by Yamaha in Japan and shipped to Sweden. Financially, it simply makes sense for seller and buyer.
From Car and Driver.
Of course, they could be wrong. But it is very similar to that engine, which was made by Yamaha. Yamaha also built the V6 SHO engine.

Not only to the OP because this has been beaten to death. Not to mention the fact that the 07 specs are OUT and have been posted and there is no V8 in the 60. Secondly, no one knows the fate of the 60 for 08 and beyond, there was talk (rumors) of killing the line altogether.

Re: (needsdecaf)

When it comes to knowing facts about product development, I would have to say that in my humble opinion Car and Driver is clueless. I seem to recall reading one of those "spied" articles a while back about the new C70 that said it would be the C40, and would be released an entire year earlier than it actually was. So I put very little faith in anything other than their test instrument numbers.
Did Yamaha build the SHO motor for Ford? Yes. And it was a great motor. Which is why Volvo said to themselves, "You know what? Our parent company, Ford, has already established a business relationship with Yamaha. Perhaps we should exploit that existing business relationship to source a V8 powerplant for our product line."
And that, folks, is about the only similarity the Volvo V8 has with the SHO.
