Anybody know if the V70 and XC70 will be swapped over to the S80 dimensions? Whay do they still make the V70 wagon? I am new to this maker and don't understand their overall model selection.

The P2 platform is flexible in that it can generate different size cars that are not derivatives of one another.

quote:
Whay do they still make the V70 wagon? Call me careless speller or goofy the proofreader!
What I asked, or intended to ask, is not "why do they make a wagon model", but "why do they have so many models that are so close to eachother in size". Isn't that what every other maker is trying to get away from? After all, we are not talking about the difference between an S40 vs. an S80, but a few inches between an V70 vs. an S80. Or am I missing something? Hence the topic post.

Re: S80 wagon some day? (Gunner S60)

Well I think I know what your getting at and Volvo is making the size of the car recognizable very easily through the number it carries although not fully yet.
Starting from the small cars:
S40 & V40 - S40 Sedan, V40 wagon version, same size. As the numbering system goes the V40 will be reintroduced as the V50 and will be the same size car as the new S40 also. (Goes up by 10 for the wagon)
S60 & V70 are also the same size cars.
S80 & a potential V90 would be the same size cars, so the V70 isn't intented to be the wagon S80 but the wagon version of the S60.
Maybe a compact S20 & V30 could be also in the works?
On a side note in the late 90's there was an S90 that was actually a renamed 960 RWD Volvo, the 850 at this time was also renamed the S70 in both wagon and sedan form. Since then the numbers in the name of the car has taken on a different meaning I think and is quite organized.
So the letters:
S = sedan
V = versatility
C = coupe
XC = cross country
the numbers:
Even numbers given to the sedan, odd numbers given to the versatility or "wagon" as we affectionately know them. The versatility car has +10 number over the sedan for related model.
I assume if Volvo redesigns a coupe (C70) it would carry the even sedan numbers or maybe be imbetween like "C65" or something, just a guess there.
I personally think the XC90 has filled the slot for a S80 wagon as it has the S80 size to it, Volvo would be competing one of there own models against each other.

Re: S80 wagon some day? (Spearzy)

Thanks large, Spearzy. That clears up my confusion. Yes you are making sense to say the XC90 is the wagon version of the S80. But another fellow said somewhere that the V70 was slightly wider than the S60. Is that true? I guess that's where I got confused.

>>>>S60 & V70 are also the same size cars.

There is no way these car are the same size. Have you ever sat in the rear seat of an S60?? You cant even move you legs because there jammed against the front seats. The V70 is a much larger car!!

Re: S80 wagon some day? (Toronto_S80T6)

By same size I meant same chasis size. The V70 has a way different roof line that would allow for better rear seating position. The wagon form is also longer, even going back to the 850 the wagon's rear end was a strenched out a couple inches longer, but, both cars are identical with all the same parts and wheelbase. Just differences in body style and little things to make a wagon a wagon and a sedan a sedan. The same is still true with the S60 & V70. The wheel base I'm sure is the same as well as parts are interchangable. This would not be the case when comparing the V70 to the S80.
Minor error re-reading my first post too, the 850 turned into The S70 & V70, not just S70. Not sure what I was thinking That was the first generation, then they split into the S60 & V70 for the next gen. car.

Maybe the mirrors are wider to see around the rear? Just a thought, not sure. Again, pretty sure the wheelbase is the same.

The only similarities exist in the front part of the car. From behind the front seats and further, the V70 is much bigger.
Yannis

Thanks for the clarification Yannis
It does look a little bigger, figured as the R is being released for both the V & S, they would share many of the same parts.
