Check out the following links:
http://www.lexus.com/allnewes/index.html
http://www.volvocars.us/campai...t.htm
Both have similar 360 degree interior and exterior video clips. I'm considering to upgrade my current S80 within a year or two. Both cars should be quite safe. The prices between the 2 shouldn't be too far apart. The ES has a very attractive and modern interior. S80's interior is more geared toward "functional" (I guess).
I think both cars are great. I love Volvo's safety, but kindda tired of the mechanical problems. Lexus is famous for reliability plus the crash test results are quite positive. If you have to choose between these 2 rides, which one would you pick?

Re: S80 vs. ES350 (Volvo_Captain)

Given that one of the reviews I read touted the fact that Volvo finally got the steering feel and handling right on the new S80 and Lexus doesn't even try with the exception of their IS series the choice is obvious for me. Once you figure the real-world pricing say 6 months or so after the S80 launches it will be a no-brainer to pick the S80.

Re: S80 vs. ES350 (rollie)

Are you saying the new S80 will be much less expensive than ES350?
Hopefully I'm totally wrong on the prediction. The new S80 looks very similar to the current S80. People who never paid attention to Volvo may not recognize the change at all. I don't expect the new S80 sales will grow much. Heavy discount should be available after about 6-9 months after introduction.

Re: S80 vs. ES350 (Volvo_Captain)

Volvo anticipates to tripple the sales of S80s, which was steadilly declining to rather dismal figures. I have my serious doubts, but wish Volvo the best luck.
Lexus 350 today is similar in price to the current S80. I anticipate that the basic S80 3.2 will be priced similarly to the current 2.5T, and therefore, to the Lexus ES.
So, the Lexus buyers will still stay with Lexus, while Volvo buyers (like myself) can hardly wait for the new model.

Re: S80 vs. ES350 (Calhon)

I (and a source that I have indirectly quoted from what I remember) meant 300% increase from the current level of sales - 10,000 in US in 2005.
That puts it to the same level as the original S80 its first full year 2000.
I have my doubts, but it is doable.

They would manipulate any bad news and make it sound like the best thing ever happen to the company.
Anyhow, to make the numbers more realistic, Volvo should compare the first year sales figure with 1999 (when the current S80 was introduced). It doesn't make sense to compare a brand new S80 sales figure with the current S80 (2006) that is 7 years old already.

But if they compare that to the S80's heyday (back in 1999 and 2000 to 2001), then they are smoking weed.
Too many super nice cars in that segment. Full of innovation and technology. The new S80 is a remarkable car. But the competition is at least one step ahead.
Yannis

Re: S80 vs. ES350 (GrecianVolvo)

Volvo dropped it on the interior design. Having been in an LS430 I understand why Lexus is such a popular brand. The dealer service is wonderful too. I am finally starting to get good service at my Volvo dealer, but will this S80 be replaced by another? That's a very tough question...will the I6 and V-8 both have a 5-speed automatic? I am getting tired of this lousy GM 4-speed transmission.

Re: S80 vs. ES350 (Majisto)

All the engines will have 6-speed GT. It's standard on the V8 and 3.2. Option on 2.5T and D5.

Re: S80 vs. ES350 (T5_awd)

I did an extensive comparison of the 2, as I was in the market for a new car in June 2006.
My brief synopsis:
Lexus, more up to date, faster engine, more "current reqs", such as proper cupholders, keyless ignition, keyless entry, venitlated (heated and cooled) leather seats, etc. However, no discount, or very little discount available in JUne. Don't know about now. Sticker price was approximately $38,000 (U.S.)
If you look at the numbers ,they are almost identical (very small differences), in almost all aspects - wheelbase, height, weight, back seat room, front seat room (legroom and height), etc.
So, why did I buy the 2006 S80? Several things - 1 no discount on ES350, vs a HUGE discount on 2006 S80 - $38K for ES350 vs $32K for S80 (sticker 39K), so were the little "nice" things worth $6,000?? Not in my opinion.
Second reason was "first year syndrome" - I don't like buying a car the first year, they already have several ES350's having transmission issues (just like the Camry they are based on).
Dealership. Lexus of New Orleans sucks to put it nicely. While Volvo of New Orleans could be improved, still a very nice experience.
I think the 2007 S80 will be an incredible car, and with it being bigger, and addressing all of the "nice things", should do even better when comparing against the 350. With that said, some people are just Lexus people, and will always buy Lexus..
just my 2 cents...

I've driven the new ES and they're nice. Kinded overated seeing that it's jazzed up Camry. It runs like stink though. Good and quiet ride but it's still overated. I'd buy a Camry...Oops did I say that? Shame on me!!

MB pricing is always one of the most expensive. Two years ago I looked at the Audi A6, BMW 530xi and MB E320 AWD and MB was always the most expensive. No way Volvo will be at the same price point. Also, I saw a show on Automotive issue for the luxury brands and MB was at the top with the most issues and most were electrical. I'll never buy a MB.
