Hi guys,
I have started already a nice going thread on the 370Z Testdrive this Saturday.
Yesterday got a call from a friend who has a Volvo dealership and he told me he received a 2007 S80 V8 Black Sapphire in EXECUTIVE version. 49000 km FULLY LOADED ! In Europe this car has price tag of 70.000 EURO and now he is selling it for 34.950 EURO so half the price.
Out of curiosity I asked what I would get when giving in my 2003 S60R (98.000 km) and he is prepared to give 16.000 EURO for my almost 6y old R. After investigation it turns out that this is a very good price for my R. It is even the price I would get if I would sell it privately.
So I can pick up a 2y old fully loaded 2007 S80 V8 Executive for 19.000 EURO !
Best price for the R I got from other dealers was around 11.000 EURO which is peanuts !
On Saturday I will testdrive the 370Z but I already know beforehand that trade in on my R will be low (around 11k).
I have 3 options:
- keep the R and drive it for couple of more years
- buy the Z and loose big time on the R
- buy the V8 and do an excellent deal on the R and the actual V8
I must admit that my car is in perfect condition. It will get its 100.000 km maintenance in July (will need to replace brakes- DISCS ). SO I think if I keep the R I will need to spend some money on it (new brakes) But after that the R is ready for couple of more years.
Spoke to my dad about it who is also Volvo freak and he told me to keep the R because you will always loose money and he told me that my R was as NEW even after 6 YEARS !
So what shall I do ?
The Z is the sporty option, the S80 v8 is the luxurious option (and honestly, this V8 sounds so niceeee, even the Nissan V6 is sounding **** compared to the V8 in the S80 !), the S60R is the rational option.
Performance wise I think there is not soooo much difference, OK different cars but they all push more than 300HP.
Guys please let me know your thoughts,
greetz
Joey

The downside of the V8 is it's aged Girltronic. It will start to bug you in the long run.

Re: s80 V8 trade - dilemma (Johann)

Hii Johan,
howre you doing, nice to her from you.
I think youre right, that is the only downer on the car, the automatic gearbox seems very slow. Every review is confirming that.
BUT the noise this thing makes, sounds even better than the v8 from audi or BMW. I saw some youtubes from guys with v8, my god, beautiful this noise and this was stock. What if you put an spotsexhaust on. Your neighbours dont know what hits them in the morning
But price-wise the offer is very good. FULLY LOADED.
How is the V70 2.5t going, beautiful car you have in white ! Arent you missing the performance from your R ... The low pressure engine should also be more luike a cruiser.
I love my R, but after 4 years and being a car fanatic I am currently checking the market.
If I wanna trde in the R I think I will need to do it now, depreciation on these cars is hugeee. Alternative is driving it till it falls apart But then again I will have to cope with eventual maintenance costs which can occur going above 100.000km.
greetz
Joey

Does it have the fridge as well? Always wondered about the S80 I passed up on before the R.

if you're a passionate driver, you will not like the automatic transmission - period. No matter what car it is... sorry
As nice as the exhaust note is on the V8, I'd stay away because of the sluchbox

Re: s80 V8 trade - dilemma (tomedkaz)

I test drove a used S80 V8 a few weeks ago and I agree the sound of the exhaust is great, acceleration was nice but to give up my R for an automatic; not ready for it yet; maybe when I turn 60 . If you love to drive, you'll miss the R. Stick with the R and put money into it (brakes, maintenance, etc.) is still cheaper then spending 19,000 EUROS or get the 370Z.

Re: s80 V8 trade - dilemma (jsalien24)

For some reason the deal on the S80 doesn't thrill me.
1) I think the reason they're selling it for 50% of its MSRP is probably because that's what the market bears for it! Residual values on 3yr old cars that don't hold their value well are often around the 50% mark. While I don't know the market in Geneva, this doesn't strike me as the deal of a century (at least not in my neck of the woods). Besides, what they're telling you (if you read between the lines) is that this S80 hasn't retained its value at all. It's not going to get better as it gets older.
2) The reason they're offering you so much for your R is because they want to get rid of the S80. They're not going to lose money on the deal.
3) It's closing in on 3 model years old with 49K km on it! That's an awful lot of someone else's drive time (and potential problems) behind the wheel. At least with your R, you know how you've driven it and you know the problems it's had (or, as per your note, that it HASN'T had).
The upside of the S80 is that you'll get into a more expensive car with more bells and whistles. It's marginally newer than your R but it's still not new.
If you were talking about a BMW 7 series or Audi A8, this would be far more appealing of a trade (to me, at least) but the S80 has little curb appeal (not that you buy a car for its curb appeal -- but it pales in comparison to the R, in my book), it's not an overly sporting car (even with the V8, especially compared to its German counterparts), and its value will continue to plummet like a stone in water. Oddly enough, while I'm not keen on automatics I wouldn't ding an S80 (or most larger luxury sedans) for not having a stick -- it's just not that kind of car and would almost be out of place.
You've got an interesting choice to make. What makes it even harder is that the Z and the S80 are totally apples and oranges. They are both trade-offs against one another so you're always weighing pros and cons that are entirely unrelated. In terms of performance, these cars are on opposite sides of the playing field. And they should be! Based on your comments, I think you will be very surprised after you've driven them both.
If it were my decision, I'd either keep the R and drive it until I fell in love with something else - OR - buy the Z....unless you absolutely LOVE the S80, in which case you should totally go for it!
Good luck!
-Eric

Re: s80 V8 trade - dilemma (Sue Esponte)

Thanks so far for the advice,
I already found it suspicious that a 2y old s80 V8 is sold at 50%.
Those cars will be very hard to re-sell, big V8, pollution numbers, taxes...etc And indeed the geartronic is very slow and maybe after a couple of months I am getting bored
It will be or the Z or ... the R (with some additional mods)
Keep you guys updated and thanks again for your comments.
greetz
Joey

But if you put it in Advanced, and you drive with the car for a while, you will learn how to make the tranny shift fast by manipulating the throttle. At least I can. But it is still a bit slow - after all, its not a sports sedan.
I would still take the V8 for a few test drives before you throw it out completely. It is a more refined and sophisticated car than the Z, more functional, more comfortable, and has relatively good performance.

Also contributing to the 'slower' feel would certainly be a more soft suspension and heavier as it IS indeed a luxury car. Not a sports car.

Re: s80 V8 trade - dilemma (Jexx)

Ask the 370Z dealer how much he will give you for the S80.
If he will give you more than 30.000 Euro, then trade the R for the S80 and trade the S80 for the 370Z. You will make an extra 0-5.000 Euro on the R trade in by using the S80 in between, and can make even more money if you get more than 35.000 Euro in trade in for the S80. If they offer you less than 30.000 Euro in trade in for the S80, then don't do it because you will lose money.
Of course, I don't know what else you need to pay in Europe, like sales tax, but just add it all in and see if you still come out on top.

A few words of caution:
You are not buying the S80 for 19.000 Euro total. You are buying the S80 for 19.000 Euro (cash or finance) + 16.000 Euro (trade-in value of R) = 34.000 Euro, but you probably rounded it off so chances are you are paying the full asking price of 34.950 Euro for the S80.
This is a common trick of the trade. Give you a good deal on the trade-in (16.000 Euro instead of 11.000 Euro, like what others are offering you), and charge you full price on the new car. It can be a good deal, but usually you can get a better deal if you negotiate each transaction individually (trade-in sale and new car purchase). In this case, it probably depends on how good a "friend" he is
Good luck.
