I am facing a new car dillema, I have an 86 744ti with mods that i am sick of. I have been looking for a good 850R for a month now with no luck in my area. I see '98 S70 T-5's everywhere with 30k for under $24k and the last 850R i looked at had 40k and they were asking $21k for it. My question to you all is: what should I go for, an 850R or S70 t-5. I have been longing for an R, but an S70 t-5 with some 17s could make a nice substitute. Any input is welcome.

They're both nice cars. Having spent seat time in some newer S70s (not an R) and my own 854R, that's a real toss up.

The R has some definite benefits like sport suspension, 17s, Alcantara interior etc.

The S70 on the other hand has less rattles, better fit and finish, and I think a newer brake system that is less likely to warp ( a big plus).

Though the R is exclusive, a homemade S70R would be moreso. Figure that if you are hardcore about performance, then the S70, to get wheels, tires, and suspension will be over $30K, which is about $10K more than the R.

Second question is are you willing to travel. Find a dealer in a metropolitan area who does a lot of business with Rs, and have them keep their eye open for you. Also try http://www.autotrader.com

One other thing you have to take into consideration is that the s70 will be a newer car. If you do plan on doing more modifications, then the newer car will (theroeticly) last longer because of its age. I might be wrong, didn't they bump up the boost in the s70 t5s from the 850 T5... It might be in this years t5 that they did it, but, its another thought... Then there is the manual as well. I have a 95 T5 and love it, some people like the way the 850s look better than the s70, but, it is a newer car. Its a tough decision, but personally, i would spring for the T5.

good luck!

I may be biased as I love my 'R' and I have heard of problems with the first year s70's. Can anyone confirm/deny that? Either way, you should be happy. I love the way the 850R looks compared to the s70 t5 which looks just like the regular s70. To me the 850R has a far more 'sporty' look (and of course has the alcantara seats which are great. Of course, if you want a manual it really doesn't matter which one is more reliable, looks better, or comes with more standard options (17" wheels, sport suspension, etc.)
