I recently gave up my '91 Jetta for a '99 S70 and realized when I started driving it that the low beam output is absolutely atrocious. I've seen HID kits and projectors. I was hoping to find maybe a euro spec headlight lens or something. Is there any way to improve the light output on the low beams?

Re: S70 Headlight Upgrades? (ninjamunky)

2003-4 C70 Jewels headlights from the dealer are very nice and drop right in place. I got my jewels with corners to match AND the XC style grill for $651

Short of E codes (which there are no more in the US) go with the 03-04 C70 lights.
Not cheap but you will have 3 times the light output (and they look 500% better)
I have them on one of my cars and it was night into day, literally!
E CODES:
(C70 lights look about the same)

Not that I'm sold on the aesthetics, but anyone try these yet?

They're off IPD.

if im not mistaken the only difference between the jewels and stock is the clear glass, which i have linked. so the stock glass simply unclips once you remove the headlight (very easy, three 10 mil bolts and a harness they lift right out)
http://www.vparts.se/sv/artikl....html
if im wrong hopefully JRL will correct me so we both know
also IPD is awesome, very good stuff

At the very least, and quite obviously, the beam pattern will be clearer. The only question that remains is if the reflective materials are different. Either way, some good ideas being thrown out here.

Re: (BEJinFbk)

Here is my 2 cents:
EDIT: I'm referring to old style headlights (98-00) here
Ecodes and DOT headlights have identical reflectors. I bought 2 sets on OEM ecodes from European eBays and second set had broken housing. I took few pics when I was swapping it with my headlights and to my amazement the reflectors were identical (part's numbers were the same as well).
I just remember someone said that reflectors are different I thought so. I never made a post about it , but it just came to mind while I was reading this.
So if you want to keep stock profile and have a decent output, go for eCode lenses. Don't forget to apply protection film on it

Re: (Papa_Kirlo)

That's not the best idea, the lights pattern will be all worng.
Brighter, yes but you WILL blind people.
As for the E codes looking like the C70 lights, yes, almost exact, but the light PATTERN is 100% different with the E codes which have the Euro cut off low beam pattern. (good).
Both are a 100% improvement not to mention they look great
The reflectors are different, you just see it by just looking at it

Obviously reflectors are different in "clear" headlights (C70 03+) I will add year to my OP.

Re: (Papa_Kirlo)

For Clarification:
There are 4 different OEM headlight options that will fit 70 series cars:
Fluted Glass—USA-DOT spec
Fluted Glass—European E-Code Spec
As stated by Papa Kirlo, these share the same reflector/housing assembly.
The fluted glass determines the throw pattern of these headlights and as JRL
has pointed out CANNOT be used with clear lenses! They become light bombs.
The stock USA-DOT configuration is very weak . Many have swapped the
E-Code lenses in and upgraded the lamps to higher output aftermarkets like
SilverStars or PIAA’s for a relatively cheap upgrade. HID’s behind fluted
E-code glass makes an even bigger difference, ( but be careful of cheapo HID’s ).
Clear Glass “Jewels” - USA-DOT spec
Clear Glass “Jewels” - E-Code spec
“Jewel” type headlights with clear, non fluted glass appeared on later model
Gen 1 C70’s to improve the car’s appearance and headlight performance.
In the case of “Jewels”, the glass is the same and the housings are different between USA-DOT and E-Codes.
The lenses are just clear protective glass and the reflector/housings assemblies control the light throw.
Hope this makes it clear as mud for a Friday Morning!
Euro junk yards, mebbe? Calling Big Will! Come in, Big Will!
Of course, since we're all just using the "E-Code" parts for "Off Road" use anyhow...

Re: (BEJinFbk)

I have the E-code jewel C70 lights on my wagon and they are wonderful just like JRL says. I lucked out and bought a used set from Erie years ago that they didn't know were E-codes but I noticed the 5w drivers lights in the housings on the internet pictures.
HAHA sorry guys - I've tried for a year to find a set of jewel headlamps over here to sell but most cars have front end damage and believe it or not, there are Volvo enthusiasts here who put these on the S/V/C70s from the first generation. ; )
If anyone is really interested, I can certainly send a set from a dealer here but the exchange rate is not strong at the moment and shipping will not be cheap.
Also, there is a small difference in the S/V70 housing on the 98-00 E-code headlamps. They have a 5w driver's lamp in the housings that the DOT spec ones do not have. Also some of them are motorized which can be a cool thing.

They are probably headlights that made their way into the country from abroad ; )
