I took out the center channel speaker on my 05 V70R w/NAV and found out that the 3x5 speaker impedance is 8ohm. Can somebody that have the non NAV car check out what their center channel speaker impedance is? I just thought it is odd to have a 8ohm speaker in this car. If the non NAV car (with the larger center speaker) has the 4 ohm speaker then I might try to replace my bad sounding center channel speaker on my NAV car with a good quality 4ohm speaker.

Re: S60R/V70R center channel speaker (awdnut)

I am not sure what you might gain by changing to a 4 ohm speaker as opposed to an 8 ohm, assuming all alse is the same.
Perhaps it is a case of more 4 ohm speakers being available?
Any solid state amp will deliver more power to a lower impedance, so in theory more power could be delivered to the 4 ohm speaker, but I have not found that to be a problem in my NAV equipped car. If anything the amp can deliver more power than the 3x5 inch speaker can handle.
Certainly there would be no harm in using a 4 ohm speaker, as the center channel is driven directly by the head unit and there are no other speakers and/or cross overs in parallel.
Let me know if you find a better speaker that fits, regardless of impedance.

Re: S60R/V70R center channel speaker (rogersampson)

Most Volvo speakers are 8 ohm. i dont know why, but they are. I wouldn't change to a 4 ohm speaker because you would in effect be doubling the power to the speaker. (when you halve the ohms, you double the watts) Fine if you get a good speaker, but I dont know how the stock amp would handle it because you would be basically bridging the channel. The effect that you would have is the rest of your speakers would be at whatever level you set it to, and the center would be A LOT louder. I dont know if you want this or not. You could buy a good 4 ohm speaker and probably do some creative wiring to get 8 ohms out of it. Granted I dont have a center channel, so I dont know how much sound acutally goes to it vs the other channels(at least in a car ).

Guys,
Yes, there are just more choices and availability of 4 ohm speakers
The difference between the center channel of sound of a NAV car and the non-NAV car is pretty significant. The NAV car center channel speaker really sucks.
I really do not think that the center channel amp is going to be really taxed by a 4 ohm speaker since I believe the non NAV center speaker is bigger than the NAV car. With regard of loudness matching, you can adjust that from the main unit.
I might try running a pair or 4 ohm 3.5inches in series to get the overall impedance 8ohm

Boston Acoustics makes a model that is the S35 for 70 bucks.
Specs look good and it's a 3 inch cutout.
I'd love to find a way to make the Navi speaker sound more like the non-navi version!
