Hi all -
I am new to this forum, although I have owned a 97 850R Wagon for 7 years now. Having just dropped $400 for a new fuel pump, its time to get a new rig.
So I have narrowed it down to a 2004 S60R or a 2003 C32 AMG. The C32 is going to be about $4-5k more money, and it is also a bit faster.
All other things being equal, how is a S60R with $4k in mods going to fair against a C32?
Also, I have read that the S60R does 0-60 in anywhere from 5.2 to 6.4 seconds. Which numbers are right?
Thank you in advance for your help with my purchase. If you feel I can beef the S60R up with $4k enough to compete with the AMG, please post the mods you would suggest.

IPD ECU ($995) + IPD Exhaust ($1,095) + IPD Downpipe ($1,400).
Should be good for 50HP. And they give you a discount if you buy them together.
Might as well get the airfilter they offer while you are at it.
http://www.ipdusa.com Their website is not the best, but give them a call as their customer service is top notch!

Are you looking at a manual S60R or an automatic? There's a big difference in performance right there. THe automatic is torque limited to 258 ftlbs (I believe) though you can eliminate it with a chip. 0-60 I think adds 2 seconds with the auto.

Have you considered the C43? That's a cool car. Don't know what they go for though.

I think he's talking about changing the pulley that drives the supercharger. A simple pulley change could take you from 5 psi to 15 psi rather easily, and then the chip will control A/F. And, truthfully, pulley's aren't that expensive.

apples and oranges... The C32 will feel much more composed and eccelerate better but the R is much more fun IMO. I am assumng that you are looking at the automatic C32 as very few manuals were made and those are extremely rare.

Re: (JCviggen)

Thanks for all the pointers fellas.
I have never seen myself as an MB guy, and am leaning toward the S60R. I suppose it doesn't have to be faster than the C32, however my brother just bought a G35 and it does have to be faster than that.
If I could ask a few more questions please...
1. Which of those mods void the warranty, and which don't?
2. I would rather have the Automatic if its even close to the manual in performance. (I live in San Francisco) How much of a drop is it?
3. Why is the KBB value on this car so low? I show low 20s for a 2004, and they sell for mid to high 20s in my area.
ps - thanks for the video...that was really something!

Also, I have read that the S60R does 0-60 in anywhere from 5.2 to 6.4 seconds. Which numbers are right?
I am probably biased but as former AMG owner, there is no comparison IMO. AMG is in a different league.
0-60 times IMHO have as much value for most of us as lateral g for NHRA. BTW AMG is hard to lunch smoothly, to much torque and very intrusive (can't be turned off completely) traction control.
I respectfully disagree when people are quoting 0-60 right and left; these times are too driver dependent and have little practical implication in the real world. Unless one is racing from every traffic light...What matters in real world are rolling times: 5-60, 50-70, 70-120, etc. where AMG models are far superior not only to R but to a lot of other high performance cars. AMG engines are famous for their low end torque, 90% of which is available literally from 1200 rpm. AMG brakes are at least as effective as Brembo. In my R I tried once to slow down from relatively high speed entering my exit just like I did in MB several times before and almost ended up in a ditch... Of course R has different weight/weight distribution, etc. but still... AMG suspension is first class as well. Some may disagree but AMG seats (with 4 air pumps) are most comfortable and anatomically correct I ever sat in.
To me it's no brainer AMG all the way...
R Rated: I am assumng that you are looking at the automatic C32 as very few manuals were made and those are extremely rare.
AMG doesn't make cars with manual transmission. I never heard of one. If you saw it, it's probably aftermarket.
I was looking at a C32 AMG too, but the fact that it doesn't come in a manual completely turned me off.
I drove one back-to-back w/ an E46 M3. The AMG felt like a much more comfortable, solid and faster car. But it was boring.
For the price, especially used, it's hard to beat the S60R. Niether the M3 or C32 felt like they were $5-15k better than the R. My brother agreed, and he owns (and races) an M3.
