Hello everyone. Been on Swedespeed for the better part of a year researching my s60r (MT) dream purchase and actually bit the bullet earlier this week. REALLY wish I didn't have this type of question to post this soon. Still pretty new to the S60R world - please bear with me. Houston, I have a problem...
After a couple of satisfying days of driving in the new-ish car (04, MT, 38,000k) I parked overnight in my driveway. Next morning she cranks robustly but will not turn over. No near ignition/partial ignition sputter, only the sound of my slowly dying battery working the starter/solenoid.
What I know:
a. I've got 35 miles remaining to empty tank and I'm parked on a severely graded driveway(front of car lower than rear).
b. I've got 11,000 more miles on the factory warranty and this may be a good excuse to see what's covered and I have a 2nd car that will get me from a - b in the interim.
What I'm wondering:
I realize this may be a stupid question but is there a possible situation that could involve the dealership not covering this sort of repair with 11k left on the warranty? Don't really know what to expect once I tow the car in and horrified at the prospect of spending any more money right away.
Are the S60/S60Rs partial to a compromised/failed fuel pump or pressure when parked on hills? Am I crazy to ask this question? Lot's of s60s in San Fran - I've seen 'em. Is there any reason to buy a big gas can and fill the tank with three gallons of 93?
OR
should I just make it easy on myself and accept that it's probably the engine/fuel pump and have AAA tow it to the dealer? Plugs look good, btw.
I also have a coworker who's strongly recommending an independent, certified Volvo-only repair station. Is there any advantage to staying independent in a warranty situation? Not sure if the indy shop has diagnostic code/ecu-capable equipt. It's tempting because the indy shop is 1/4 the tow distance than the dealer shop.
Big thanks. calimeister

You answered your own question, probably no fuel. You CANNOT go by any mileage computer below "50 miles to empty"
Try filling it up first, coast to level ground and try again

I promise you what JRL has said is right! I have had my reading at 35mph and 8hrs later, my car will not start. This is not unusual. Welcome to the boards, go get you some gas!

In winter, it is a little more tempermental. If I leave the car sitting for 6 hours in -20 degree weather, with 10km worth of gas left, chances are it will chug for a few seconds before starting up.

Could possibly be a problem with the electronic starter kill built into the keyless entry/alarm system. A problem with this system SHOULD be accompanied by a warning message on the LCD text readout to the left of the gauges asking you to turn the car off and try starting again.
Hope it's gas - probably is, although I too have driven my car quite a ways on empty ("10 miles to empty" down to "--- miles to empty" and so on... never a problem).
- Tryg

BTW I've had my fuel mileage reading under 20 no problem. I only did this once.

Re: S60R stuck? in my driveway... (phuz)

It's really an interesting phenomenon. I've had some cars start with "---" miles to empty tank, and then I've had some cars not start with "50" miles to empty tank.
Keep in mind that number "X to empty" is determined by 1) the remaining fuel as detected by the fuel level sensor, 2) your current fuel economy, which is averaged over the previous 10 miles' driving. So if your driving style changes drastically in less than 10 miles, the "X to empty" could be severely off.
Also, as JRL alluded, the gas tank in the R (in all P2 cars, actually) is super-weird shaped. It is very wide and not very deep, so the lower the fuel level is, the more difficult it is for the fuel sender/pump to pick up fuel and deliver it. Throw a hill into the mix, and I'd say that's the most likely cause for the problems our friend is experiencing.
Personally, I always try to fill up at a 1/4 tank. Worst-case scenario, I won't go much past the redline.

Re: S60R stuck? in my driveway... (calimeister)

Had to crank on level ground a few times after siphoning nearly two gallons out of a friends motocycle. Five minutes after that I was filling up at the local station.
Still seems strange to have no issue parking on a grade and then - absolutely no gas making it to the fuel pump the next morning. It appears that the grade influenced the issue, just not sure how much. With props to JRL, "50 miles to empty" is this newbie's new mantra.
With the taste of gas still on my lips I say thank you to everyone for their practical and varied feedback! calimesiter
