Just got off the phone with Robert @ Rawbear Performance about scheduling an appointment to bring my car in and he mentioned that he's putting springs on an R on the 3rd. Anyone here?
This is kind of an anti-siting siting post since I haven't seen the car, won't see it but will know where it is a few days from now! lol
-Eric

That would be me...it is scary when the first question you are asked by Robert is "so what else you planning?" I know that hanging out in this forum only increases the likelyhood of more mods, but I wasn't expecting the shop to so openly ask...it was almost like a dare
Eric, what are looking at having done?

What springs are you going with?
Make sure he calibrates the SUM after the springs are installed other wise you will be looking at Bats in trees at night. LOL
Bring it by Kundert when it is done. would like to see it.

What's the lowdown on this Rawbear place? Seems like through searches they have a good reputation. I'd like to be able to overcome any of the "bad spring seating" or negative camber issues that have been encountered. Clifton is a lot closer to me than going to JRL's dealer!
Please tell your experiences, I would appreciate them. For some reason, I can't get on their website now, although Google comes up with their site as a hit.
Thanks

Re: (Johnnylaws60r)

I'm having springs and a rear sway bar done...as well as having them remove my center resonator. He laughed when I asked him about the latter mod and questioned what I was hoping to achieve. I laughed and said,"noise!" He appreciated the honesty and was relieved that I didn't say "more power". Besides, everyone knows that the only way to achieve real horsepower is through the addition of window stickers!
Let me know how things go with the work!
-Eric

Robert is quite a unique fellow. He seems to be equal parts brutal honesty, and humour. He extolls his exploits on Gran Turismo 4 and is dedicated to Volvos, except on GT4 where he prefers a Mecedes on the Ring road I will keep everyone updated on the work...he has put me at ease at least in the brief meeting with him.

However, I would like to avoid some of the issues with having extreme negative camber on one side or the other, as you say. That is the issue that i'm referring to. If I have to, in the words of JRL, "loosen up the subframe and juke it around" to get things to work right, I want to go to a place who knows how to do that. Right now the diffence in my rear camber from one side to the other is 0.41 as per my last alignment specs.
Basically I want to find someplace that is experienced in installing lowering springs and the technical challenges that go along with them, and who is also familliar with Volvos. I'm hoping I just may have stumbled onto the right guy!

Re: (needsdecaf)

I can install them for you at my dealer in Hasbrouck Hgts. NJ. If you are willing to drive to Clifton we are only 20 min from there.
136 RT17N

Re: (Helmut Ranff)

Helmut, they are a fully equipped Volvo shop.
The reason I chose them over a lot of places who are closer is because (1) they've come very highly recommended without reservation from anyone and everyone who has dealt with them, (2) they are a Volvo-specific shop, and (2) they have VIDA on-site.
Oh, and their labor rate is much less than what you'll find from any dealer. Is there any way to double bold the word "much" or put flashing lights around it?
As Johnny pointed out, Robert seems to be a real straight shooter - very to the point and with a good sense of humor. He's an enthusiast, too, so he gets it.
-Eric

Eric - expect a call from Robert @ rawbear...
My S60R is the first one that he has installed the springs and Sways according to him and he has mis calculated the amount of time of installation. He will probably call you to give you a new estimate. He said he figured that it would be similar to the installation to an 850 but through the work has realized that S60R is much tighly put together.
Have you all ever felt that the universe is conspiring against you...I had to rent a car to get home last night as Robert had to keep the car over night, and of course when I woke up this morning at 845 I come to find that the Rental had been towed because of street cleaning. So when I have the total cost for the job I will post it. (Minus towing of course) I still have confidence in Rawbear, just hoping that my car doesn't become his learning project.
Re: (Johnnylaws60r)

Yikes! I was planning on dropping my car off Monday night so he could have it all day on Tuesday for pick up that night.
Since I live in CT, I also planned on getting a rental to get home. One thing to keep in mind is that his costs are still much lower than you'd pay elsewhere. If there's a learning curve associated with the R, I hope he's reasonable in how he handles the cost of it.
When he told me he thought it would take ~5 hrs, I figured he was being a little optimistic, but I figured 7.5 hrs as a max based on dealer install estimates for the springs and rear sway bar....and then considered price. It made renting a car (even at 7.5 hrs) worthwhile.
-Eric

46W over the river, onto Crooks Ave, left onto a service road and they should be the first driveway on the right.
-Eric

Just got the car back and it handles amazingly well...Robert did a good job, just a little longer than anticipated. Eric - I think that if you set the expectation up front and give him all tuesday you should be fine...it was the front swaybar that presented the biggest headache for him. Labor pre tax was $484 for just over 9 1/2 hours, can't really beat that
