Hey SS,
I read this statement somewhere through a Google search, but haven't been able to find any more discussion on it.
Apparently, the ECU processor running the 2005 S60R ECU is twice as fast as the 2004.
Does anyone know if it's possible to upgrade the processor? I'm aware of ECU flash upgrades, but I want to know if the actual chip can be upgraded. Is it a plug-and-play procedure? Anyone know where to buy?
Thanks a lot.

Its not PC, you are not going to play games on it , and the car will not work faster either

Re: S60R ECU Processor Upgrade (idiomaniak)

No
It's not just faster it's an entirely different electrical system, (not compatible)

Re: (imageomega)

No? To all of the above?
If anyone wants to give more details, it would be helpful for my curiosity. What differences are there between the stock GT performance of a 2004 and 2005 just due to the ECU processor speed difference? What sort of things does the processor speed affect? (Shifting, sensor monitoring, etc.?)
Then what is the difference after the same ECU upgrade is applied to both years? Do upgraded 2004s and 05s perform the same, or is the variance margin maintained due to the different processors?

Thanks again and sorry for my ignorance.

Re: (s140s)

Thanks for that. I realize it's not a PC, and neither am I. However, the plug-and-play concept is not exclusive to desktop computing, nor is it non-existent in the auto world.
Have a nice day.

No wonder you have 4 posts. You are WAY TOO NICE for SwedeSpeed.
Rip him a new one or something
Yes, no to all of the above. It has been discussed and the final answer is this: For the cost involved in "upgrading" a 2004's computers to a 2005+'s computers, you could buy the 2005+.
They perform exactly the same, given the same circumstances.
There is a difference in 04/05 and 06/07 for the GT tranny, but its software base, nothing to do with hardware. The 04/05 GTs are torque neutered, I mean, limited, to.... something like 240 and not the full 296 (in 1st and 2nd gear).

And to answer the OP original question, the faster processer enables things such as the 4C to react faster versus the 04.

Re: (MagoonR)

The processor that is faster is ONLY the SUM.
ECM is not changed to my knowledge.
And no, the SUM is not upward compatible as JRL said because the whole system is different. Trust me, I know this.
There really is no difference to an '04 and '05 as far as the power and the engine goes, just depends on the trans torque limiting.

Re: (R broski)

i appreciate the replies, especially those who could do it without the condescending attitude. one would think we're all here because of a common interest and passion and that people might be kind first, but it seems some can't wait for the chance to point out someone's lack of knowledge or expertise. i didn't think the question was that stupid, honestly. i know something about cars.
anyway, thanks again.
probably gonna get some crap for this, too, but can the 04/05 GT be switched out and replaced with the 06/07 6-speed GT to achieve max torque if there are no hardware differences as stated above?

Again buy an 06-07 if that's what you want, the cost would be prohibitive.

Just get an IPD stage 2 tune and it removes the TQ delete. Really wakes up the car

Did they detune the T5 below its specs as well? The two cars are pretty close acceleration wise, IMO, especially in first and second. (The R clearly wins due to other factors, however.)
Thanks for the info.

The T5 displacement is less than the R but the R has AWD and a host of other goodies that the T5 does not (though the 05+ T5 has the same turbo). In 2004/2005 guise, an R GT performance is probably worse than a comparable T5.
If you beleive the Volvo literature, the R MT goes 0-60 in 5.4 seconds and the 04/05 R GT does it in 7.2 seconds. The real world truth lies somewhere inbetween.

Thanks for the advice/info guys. I planned to do an ECU upgrade, but need some other things first (hardware). I'll check out the tweak. Looked up T5 specs. 0-60 in 7.3 for the GT. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the R, it just seems kinda silly to me that Volvo would design a high performance version of a car and then "detune" it so it performs just .1 s better than the next "lower" model. Why not just design the engine so it can be released with the "true" specs?
