The Volvo part number for the alternator for your R (2005) is 36050263. The equivalent Bosch part number is AL0854.

For anyone with an 04 R that happens to stumble across this thread, the Volvo part number for the alternator for 04 Rs is 36050262 and the equivalent Bosch part number is AL0820.

Cheers,

Jeff

Another bit of information on the Bosch part numbers, if it ends in an N, it's a brand new alternator. If it ends in an X it is a rebuilt alternator. So, AL0820X is rebuilt, while AL0820N is brand new.

Does the R really only come with a 140 amp alt? I see some with 160 amp listed under the R on RockAuto. The Bosch #AL0854X unit is $416.56 minus $110.77 at RockAuto if you send your core back.

The 2004's came with 140 amp, while the 2005+ came with 160 amps I believe.

The 854 listed for 05+ models are 140 amps while the 832 is listed at 160 amps. 820 is also 140 amps.

But....sometimes when you order an X alternator, you may get a brand new one.
not always though...
WHen they don't have cores to rebuild they sure do sub new ones. Volvo reman'd engines and other things are also in this "maybe I get a new one" lottery too.

Are there any advantages/drawbacks to upgrading to the 160A alternator on an '04?
