Hello everyone! This is my first time in this area of the site and wanted to get some input. I have not driven the S60 T5 yet and was wondering how it compares to an 850 T5 or 850 R. I will be in the market for a new car soon and was looking at the 60 as well as maybe a C70. I have also tried the CLK 430 and S 40 Avant. I am interested in a car that will be my daily driver while my 850 gets to rest. I do not plan on many large mods to the daily car other than the usual ECU and exhaust stuff. I plan on dumping the not so easy to maintain things into my 850. Any thoughts or ideas?
Prospero

Hey Matt, the S60 T-5 has the spaceball, which is a big improvement over the auto in your 850. From the factory, performance is about the same as the R, and it is much more refined (less rattles, less prone to warping rotors etc etc).
The upside to the C70 is you can buy it used. If you get it, get the high pressure turbo with manual. They're hard to find, but my contact at Annapolis Volvo could probably scare something up.
Not sure what your price range is, but the S60 AWD should be here by fall.

Man, do I love that Ocean Race color or what~! That is some nice color, I'm almost very tempted to get one. Too bad they wouldn't have that color for the S60.
George, do you know if the V70R or the S60R is coming out any time for sure? I've just talked to the dealer, sounds like the S60 AWD is due out in another week. Unless they are going to sell those new Rs, I doubt I would want to wait for another winter for it.
I don't see how my C70 would be practical for the winter, even though MD winter is nothing compared to Upstate NY's.
Heck, maybe I'll just stick with the Ocean Race blue V70 T5A, forget about the manual, not like they are gonna have the space ball thingy for the V70 anyway. I wonder if they can retro fit that on the new V70 T5M.
Swedespeed sure got a sick load of insider info.
[This message has been edited by The_one_n_only (edited 08-14-2001).]

The-one,
4Car in the UK just sent me an email saying next week they might have some more spy shots for me on the S60R & V70R.
As soon as I get some more information, I will post it here first. Oh yeah, the S60R & V70R will definitely be here before winter 2002, no need to worry about that one.
-Drew

[This message has been edited by InDy (edited 08-10-2001).]

Well, maybe I will wait for the R versions to come out. After driving the S4 Avant in both 6-speed and Tiptronic auto, I was sorta pleased. Thanks to Kai for pointing out the lack of room in the rear seats though. I dorve the cars for over 1 hr each and got back into my 850 and was still happy with the performance overall. The nice thing about the S4 was the complete lack of turbo lag and noise. It was quiet and quick. Though I know it is not as fast as my 850 after the mods. Still fun and nice to drive. Any other ideas about similiar cars to try?
Prospero

What's your price range Matt? BTW, while I too love the look of the V70 Ocean Race, I'm not sure yet that it is coming to the USA. The XC is, but they haven't confirmed the V70 as of yet.
As for the Rs, I don't know if they'll be here by winter or not. I spoke to my contact inside Volvo North America, and while he said they'd be here by winter last spring, it now doesn't sound as sure. One never knows, but I would bet spring at the absolute earliest.
Kai, your 240 should be okay in the snow from what I hear. I too love that Ocean Race color, and I keep thinking of doing a 240 in that color .
Matt, other cars to consider. Hmmmm. How about the new A4 when it arrives this fall.
BTW, on the awd S60, Volvo has a press event in Maine next week. I would imagine they are holding the cars at port until after that, though you never know. I'm going to Maine, and I'll make sure to post what I see on the site.
BTW, I just got the 2002 model info. I'll have an article on that up by tomorrow.

George,
That's EXACTLY what I was thinking for my 240 if I do plan to keep it for good! My cousin Mark was thinking about painting the 850 in some blue color and that was the color I recommended him, too. BTW, I did finally talk to Rich over at EIP in person the other day. Since the car is almost done, they are also much nicer to me now...
For my 240, that color would almost be too sexy~
Hey..if I can get a good offer on that car, I will just sell it and lease the Ocean Race XC or V70..
Matt, reconsider...maybe you really do want to look into the A6 Avant 2.7T when it comes out. I wonder if they will sell those RS6..or whatever they were calling that twin turbo version of the S6. That'll be some ride!~!

BTW the 2.7T Avant isn't coming to the US that I've heard about. The S6 however, will be here in the fall (not to be confused with the RS6 which should debut at Frankfurt).
George

George,
So I guess that model is only for the other world market?
Hmm...just regular S6...well, that still gonna cost an arm and a leg anyway. Not sure if that's worth it when you have other big boys roaming around. 540, E430, GS430...

I was ready to go out and buy an S60 T5 when I heard about the AWD variant coming out. I definitely would prefer to get an S60 with AWD, and I may be patient enough to wait for the S60R if it is going to be in the next model year or sooner, but I want to know what the timing is on the R. Is it going to be a 2003 model (like September next year), or is it (please G-d) going to be a late 2002 entry? It seems like you all may actually be able to give me an answer on this, unlike my local Volvo dealers. Thanks!
