I was filling my fuel tank recently, and following automatic shutoff of the pump, I noticed a gush of fuel run out from underneath the car directly below where the fuel filler opening is, as I pulled out the nozzle. Fuel continued to drip for several minutes. I have not noticed this before. I should add that the fuel pump nozzle had one of those rubber vapor retention collars on it. Is there an overfill shunt at the top of the fuel filler neck that prevents an overfill from running out the neck and down the body of the car? Or is there a leak in the fuel filler? Or none of the above?

There is definitely an overfill shunt at the top of the fuel filler neck. This does prevent fuel overflow from getting on the driver and body of the car, where it can cause harm. There is nothing wrong with your car, as this is a preventative safety device.

Two things you should note about filling up any car. It is widely agreed upon by automotive techs that you should never try to fill the tank after the automatic pump stops. This can damage internal parts of the fuel system, and cause wasted fuel. The rubber vapor retention collar in your case, most likely caused backpressure, causing the fuel to overflow.

The second thing, particularly with new Volvo's, is that you must make sure that the fuel cap is on tight after you are done fueling or you will get a warning message. When you twist the cap on, it will click repeatedly when it is secure.

That helps tremendously - thanks very much. I never do "top off" after automatic shutoff, but I didn't know about the vacuum/vapor collar issue.
