So I have a 2012 S60 with the 2.5T and whenever I accelerate hard onto the highway (I have to because the on-ramp to the highway in my town is pretty short). After doing that I get that smell when your car gets hot or something in the engine bay is getting hot. I was wondering if anyone has had this happen to them and if they found an issue. I have just over 100K miles and theres no known issues with the car. Recently had routine maintenance done with a volvo specialist and said the car is in excellent condition. Any thought? I'm not very familiar with the specifics of the engine bay since I have owned this car for only a year but could it be the turbo blanket if it has one? Or a heat shield?

First, thank you for accelerating hard onto the highway. My daily commute home consists of a sufficiently long on ramp that even the most underpowered economy cars should be able to reach a safe merging speed, yet everyday there is a bottleneck as some driver reaches the merge point going 45 mph seemingly unaware that they were on a freeway on ramp and traffic on said freeway is going 70 mph+. But I digress.

If your trusted mechanic is telling you your car is in excellent condition, I'm inclined to believe him/her. To make yourself feel better, perhaps you could go on a road test with your mechanic in the car and you demonstrate this "hot" smell after hard acceleration.

I think that's just normal blow by on a car with some miles - nothing to be worried about at this point. Just make sure you're checking your oil level religiously as the 2012 motors tend to have issues.
