So I bought a set of S60 R gauges from a 2004 R and I attempted to put them in my 2001 S60 T5 this afternoon. It appeared to be pretty much plug and play but the gauges decided to go Paris Hilton on me. They look good but otherwise are pretty much useless and a waste of space. No functions work (i.e., needles, readouts, etc.). Does anyone know what the problem may be, or how to test the guages to see if it is an internal problem, rather than a compatibility issue? Any help/input/solutions to make these work is great! Thanks!
-Adam

Re: S60 R Gauges in S60 T5...problems... (S60Driven)

Just to bump this back up...anyone ever tried this on their S60 before? I can't be the first...

you will need a software that is not available for your car.

What kind of software? Any chance of getting it to work through another method? I need some wiring wizards to help me out on this one!

The best would be to use the facia from the R gauge cluster and adapt it to your old S60 instrument cluster.
If you know what I mean.. Then you need to 'steal' some rheostat:ed signal to the white front lights for the gauges. The standard S60 have a backlit gauge.
It takes some work. But it's doable

Yeah thats where my problem comes in. I am not a wiring guru by any means. I have done basic stereo installs and sub/amp combos but I definitely don't want to screw this up.
There was one guy that did something similar on here (S60Evolve) and as far as I know, he is the only other one to do this. I don't think he is on the boards anymore though.

Personally I wouldn't mess with it, cuz if you screw up your gauge cluster, you will lose your mileage when you have to get a new one. I would just get the silver rings that go around the stock s60 gauges and call it a day.

The needles and tickers around the silver bezels are backlit, while the numerals on the blue dials are chrome and reflect the light from above. You probably knew this already, but I want to be sure you get it right the first time (errr... second time). While you're at it see if you can change the illumination on the digital displays. I've always wondered if this is possible. Blue/white or red would look good IMHO.
Best of luck! - Tryg

You won't loose your milage when 'messing' with the clusters. It's electronical. It takes it's data from the ECM for instance. And other sources.

Re: (Rick_K)

I have been looking over everything and I am deciding to go the route of switching all of the R stuff into the T5 cluster. I will need to find a place to re-solder white LED's into the cluster then determine a way to power the upper 4 lights that illuminate the front. I wish there was a way to re-flash the cluster or to wipe out the info on it and just plug and play, but it seems that it is not going to be that easy. If I knew it was going to be this much trouble I probably would have said screw it, but just staring at that beautiful cluster at my house, I must go forward.

Re: (T5Killa)

As Rick mentioned, your mileage is stored in the cars computer (for many reasons, one so you cannot reset it). Changing clusters won't mess it up.
I for one thought about doing this myself, but 1) I was told it couldn't be done and secondly, the cluster was not the cheapest thing. Instead, I opted for the $60 silver rings from IPD, look great.

Re: (VolvoLT)

I got the cluster for a decent price otherwise I would be pretty upset about it not being plug and play. Once I get it working, I know it will be worth it. Until then, damn technology is making this hard for me.
