My 2000 s40 1.9T 109k automatic has recently developed the problem of not being able to hold an idle. Car starts and runs fine but immediately dies once the RPM's drop below 750. The only way to keep the engine running is to keep my right foot on the gas and brake with the left. I replaced the fuel pressure regulator to no avail and need some more ideas on causes. Having just purchased this car, and not being too familar with Volvos and their quirks, does anyone have any idea if this is a problem that commonly occurs? Any and all responses are appreciated.

Re: S40 won't hold an idle (t_01ma)

In addition to the check for vacuum leaks at the throttle housing, inlet manifold, or associated hoses, check the following:
1. Fuel filter--clogged
2. Fuel pump faulty or pressure low
3. Fuel tank vent blocked, or fuel lines restricted
4. Engine management system fault
