Very pleased to say that there has finally come an answer to our prayers.
Volvo is offering an AUX-input as well as MP3/WMA capability from the CD(changer). There seems to be no possibility to adapt older systems since it will be a new audio system, but imo, the headunit should be replaceable with the 07 unit.
High performance
Amplifier 4x40 incl DSP (mixing, compressor…) Mic input
2 front door speakers 6,5" woofer/mid, 50W
2 tweeters front door 1", 50W
2 rear door speakers 6,5" coaxial, 50W
2 rear door d-pillar 1", 50W
AM/FM tuner
Antenna
NEW! Re: S40/V50 MY07 audio (fir646)

I've said it once, and I'll say it again- if you have a S40 now, there will be no elegant iPod solution from Volvo or any other company. Our system is too complex and there isn't a big enough market for anybody to make a profitable solution. Unless they charge us a rape-me price, like $1500+ (labor fees not included).
I bet that the new headunit will be incompatible with older models.
And I bet that it took a ridiculous amount of changes to get our system to work with the MP3/AUX/satellite radio options.
You'll see a S40 R before you see a resonably priced AUX input solution for us. With RWD-bias AWD. And the 4.2L V8 borrowed from Aston Martin, turbocharged. With a carbonfiber body. For $36,999 MSRP.

Yeah, I asked the Volvo sales manager about changing the head unit who emailed a Volvo engineer who said it wasn't possible.

Re: S40/V50 MY07 audio (eurotrash)

The 2005-2006 model years are going to be the one's to avoid when looking for an S40. Similar to the difference made between the 2002 and 2003 BMW M3s with their update anemities like nicer interior, standard aux-in, and updated nav. Then again, I wouldn't let that stop me from getting the M3. Because in the end, its still an M3. I wonder if my S40 will follow suit. I doubt it.

I realized that Volvo is a very negative company...nothing can be done, or changed, or added, or taken away . They should change that negative attitude, they are loosing money with it!!!

Yeah right. The only people complaining are the ones who already own the S40. Volvo already has their money.

What are you talking about? Volvo has made a good car, they just didn't forsee the type of option that the buyer of the S40 wanted. THey traditionally had an older crowd here in USA buying there cars not because of looks and options but because of safety and reliability.
I wouldn't say they are negative about anything.
No, they have addressed the major issues, but backward compatibility is never an issue with manufactureres because cars break and are replaced.
As far as MP3 capability on your car, you can do it fairly easily and somewhat inexpensively. I've upgraded my audio system nicely and it sounds great.
If you can't do any work yourself, then add a bit more for labor.

Re: (warmonger)

It's not about the audio only. It's about everything. Take for example something simple as an auto dimming mirror. They said the wiring is not there and that's why you can't do it. Talking to somebody that did this, he said that the wiring is done, that you only need to get a mirror and plug it in. And since you mentioned the stereo, pretty much every car offers or supports ipod integration.
I tried getting the homelink visor from Volvo...my dealership didn't know what it was and they said, "we don't have such accessory. If you didn't get it with the car you can't get it"....that's what I'm talking about.
Besides, if you were Volvo wouldn't you like to keep your customers happy and try to come up with a solution that not only is going to help us, but alos it's going to make money for them.
I guess that the attitude towards changing stuff in your car depends on where you are. Here in Louisiana the less they have to do with your car the better. I'm even having trouble getting them to install the bluetooth accessory that I paid for when I got the car. But when you deal with people like boston volvo they seem to be pretty flexible and wanting to help depending on what you are trying to do.
Just my personal experience.

Re: S40/V50 MY07 audio (MarvynDT)

I guess I am glad I waited a (few) years. Now that these changes are made for the 07's, the s40 is now back in the running. Just to confirm though, it is an AUX in, not a firewire/usb adapter? So no control from the wheel/dash?
I've been quiet here for a long time, but still read all of your posts everyday - good to see the site is still strong and full of dedicated users!
-jm

According to the info on this thread:
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=59191
It's an aux in that comes with the premium audio package.

I just think that they targeted a different market with different needs and failed to understand fully what that "age group" really wanted. They have really been improving their market share for the past several years, esp. with the new S40 and I'm guessing that being part of the global Ford setup has helped that.
I'm sure they'll learn now though. As far as the cars build quality and the engineering....I'm very impressed though. This car is very solid, built like a tank and has so far got a great powertrain.
Re: (Pat'sNewV50)

JL Audio Cleansweep installed into the trunk, spliced into the factory speaker wires. Then RCA wires from the cleansweep to two amplifiers mounted in the trunk also.
One amp drives the front end which is Bostonacoustics Pro60 components in the front doors, Polk Momo Carbo 6.5s coaxial mounts for the rear doors with external crossovers.
The other amp drives One JBL GTi directdrive 12" sub with about 600wRMS in a .75 ft^3 box. This woofer is outstanding for the money. THey used to be pricey but now they are more affordable and it just hammers out the bass. It is a bit heavy, about 35lbs though.
Anyway, you cut the speaker harness when it is on its way to the door speakers, route the signal side into the JL unit. The output is RCA's, four or two channel and go into the amplifier. THe DSP in the JL unit calibrates the radio output so it produces a completely flat output signal to the amps in spite of any DSP action the head unit does on its own. THe only negative is you can only calibrate the volume on the radio at one position because if you cange the volume you "may" cause the internal DSP in the head unit to alter the radio signal more (as in reduce bass when you turn up the vol to prevent distortion in factor speakers) and in so doing it will throw off the calibration until you return to that volume setting.
So the JL unit provides you with a remote volume/switch knob that I mounted next to the bezel where the 12v adapter is aft of the shifter in my car. It came with two knobs, one in black and one in brushed aluminum just like the center console stack in the volvo so it matches very well.
Anyway, the volume knob is also a push button that changes over to remote Aux input for the cleansweep.
So I ran the rca-stereo jack cable to the back of the console stack where I can now plug in my MP3 player/Ipod and get any kind of audio signal right into the JL unit without any distortion or secondary devices....and hence a clean signal right to the amps.
Perfectly clean sound and costs about the same as if you upgraded your car in the old days with a new cd player, speaker and amps. I did all the work myself and spent about $1000 on the speakers and JL Cleansweep.
I already had the amps so that was a pretty good savings.
Still, I bought all pretty high-end equipment.
The JL costs about $350, a decent 4 channel amp is about $250, Speakers can be had for another $350 for component sets for all four doors.
So $1000 in parts if you do it yourself is reasonable for very good clean sound.
Figure $1500 if you pay someone to do it right.
For high end equipment and amps with a sub like I did and paying someone, figure about $2000-$2500 for what I put in myself.
