2008 S40 T5 AWD, 8000 miles. Yesterday everything, engine and electrical, went dead at traffic light. All electrical items were dark and unresponsive with one exception. The wipers came on high. I disconnected the negative battery cable, reconnected it, everything returned to normal and I was on my way. I will take it in to be diagnosed under warranty, but I was wondering if anyone else has seen this?
Thanks

Re: S40 enginine and electrical suddenly died (ghclark)

Hmm... I 've never had any sort of electrical problem with my 5-year old 2004.5 S40 T5 since day one (I have about 40k miles on the clock at this point, yes I know it's a severely under-used car). Maybe I'm just lucky...

Nope your the first ive heard of this. The wipers came on due to the fail safe mode, figure when you lose communication to the wiper module that you should have wipers on default just in case its raining lol.
Take it in and have the dealer scan it, im curious what codes it set. Probably a CAN fault or something.

Good luck, it's an easy fix. Thankfully it was a one time fix under warranty.

Just guessing...
They'll find no codes because the battery has been disconnected, so they'll either do a software update or tell you there's nothing wrong with your car.
You're lucky this happened at traffic lights and not on the hiway or during overtaking...

Not entirely true, depends on how long the battery was disconnected. Codes stay stored for a long time.

Re: S40 enginine and electrical suddenly died (sanatarium)

Thanks to all for the replies.
Update: the dealer kept it all day Friday and could find nothing. There were no codes - I only had the battery disconnected 5-10 seconds. Another peculiar thing that was happening after this incident was that the electric window auto up/down function was not working the morning after (or this was when I first noticed it it) on either front window. Later that morning it was working again on the front passenger side but not the front driver side. On Friday morning, when I took it to the dealer, the function was again working on the front driver side as well. It's like the computer gradually fixed itself.
The dealer said they reinstalled some software but could not do anything else.
This car is haunted!

Re: S40 enginine and electrical suddenly died (ghclark)

i thought i was in for some sh*t when this happened to me a couple weeks ago. I was driving and the stereo got staticy and the screen started pulsing...shortly after the car stopped dead. I fiddled with the positive battery connection and it came back to life. a couple days later i unlocked the car, put the key in and turned...nothing. so i played with the battery some more and it worked again. took it to the dealership and they found nothing wrong except for corrosion on the terminals. Oh and the cd changer has been broken since i picked the car up from the dealer. on the plus side the car hasn't died since. good luck, i hate this car and cant wait to get rid of it
