i think most of the problems are for the MY 2000 ( Phase One)
the fuel pressure regulator is a common problem. hard starting is the most noticeable symptom.
also the engine mounts tend to go bad after awhile for all first gen s40s (2000-2004 U.S. Market). lots of vibration under acceleration and such is an easy way to troubleshoot that problem. i suggest you go over to http://www.s40concepts.net

unless it was well maintained, i wouldn't buy a high mileage s40. ive seen 2004 s40's with 45k for only 6-7k. its worth the little bit of extra money to buy lower miles.
but that's just me. after the hassle of my car after i bought it, i wish i would've gone for a low miles s40
2001 S40 RED
RED Paint job is a one coat without clear coat. Paint fades on the body but not the bumbers
I had a 2000 S40 in non clearcoat red and your statement is correct for that color. However, this listing shows the red metallic (think it was called Torch Red) which is a clearcoat.
