The battery in my S40 died suddenly, unexpectedly, and prematurely today. I verified that it's shorted out internally. I mean, seriously, the car is 2.5 years old.
After two years, Volvo will cover 50% of the factory battery replacement cost...But, why would I want to pay for another Volvo battery.
So, after measuring the stock battery and shopping around at Sam's Club, Walmart, Autozone, Advance Autoparts, O'reilly Autoparts, and NAPA....I found a battery that meets the factory cranking amps, fits the stock box perfectly, has an excellent warranty (3 years free replacement, 8 years pro-rated), and is reasonably priced ($90) - Bosch 40R590B.
Bosch batteries are sold at Pep Boys and, despite what you might read on the internet, are in fact manufactured by Bosch. They are not another cheap re-branded Johnson Controls battery (Energizer, Duralast, etc.) like you'll find everywhere else.

Ya, that looks like a good find too. Too bad I'm a loyal member of the competition (Sam's Club).
I added both battery part numbers to the Parts List thread. http://forums.swedespeed.com/z...90345

Assuming your alternator is functioning correctly, batteries should last at least 3 years and average 4 - 5 years in a hot climate.
In my previous cars (Eclipse and Civic), the factory batteries lasted 4 years (Eclipse) and 6 years (Civic). Same experience with my parents and gf's car (4 - 6 years).
I've heard rumors that the Volvo electrical system tends to kill batteries early because it pulls a larger-than-average load when the car is shutoff (thus draining the battery more frequently). It's been mentioned that a Volvo battery may be completely dead after ~3 weeks of sitting idle which sounds, well, ridiculous.

I guarantee the volvo battery will be dead after 3 weeks. I know from experience.
I believe they are only speced to last 2 weeks without the car turning on. There is a massive current draw when the car is off.

What kind of draw do you have on the battery? Do you do short trips between start up and shut off? What kind of climate do you live in? All have direct relation to battery life. I understand some are going thru batteries but i wouldnt recommend anything other than factory. Not like ive seen a duralast be any better than stock lol.

Two Yrs. Olde has been Very Good .
I did have to Clean and Re tighten the Battery Cables to the Post .
Don't Know why the Cables seem to Loosen Up ?
Seems to happen on the - Positive Post - More - just Twice - Never had a Battery Cable or Post do this ( Maybe It wasn't Tight enough First Time & Second Time , Maybe I didn't Tighten It Enough - so I Over Tighten Just a Little ( Will See If It Happens Again )
So It is Possible , as I Heard of Other's having this Issue - that If You Never Check , Clean , Service the Cables to the Battery Then Your Battery Might Just Die !
