I was driving into work this morning and i was getting close to my exit. There was a trucker going about 45mph so i decided i would pass him before the exit. I went out to pass and i floored it (in 5th gear no downshift) the turbo spooled and RPMs went up slowly then you hear the motor reving more and the RPMS jump from about 3500 to 4000rpm like a surge of power or spinning tires. Seeing as i was doing about 75mph im sure it wasnt the tires spinning but im curious as to what would make the RPMS fly up as if i were peeling out. My speed went up slightly and the RPMS went up a lot. I let off the gas because i was shocked. I didnt want to see what would happen if i just kept it floored so. I have 1 CEL for a P0440 purge valve but thats it. I have new plugs, wire, cap, rotor, coil so im lost. I do have some stuff added on (look in my sig) and also i turned the wastegate 1/2 a turn (i havent had time to turn it back yet). I have no problems at idle, crusing, sputtering, missing, odd noises, ect, ect. Any ideas?

Are you on the original clutch? Because that's actually how you test for clutch slipping. Since you're most likely to not spin the tires in high gear, you just floor it and put down max torque. If the rpms climb without the speedometer going up, your clutch is at the end of its life.

i actually just thought of that while i was driving back... and the worst part is im gunna shoot someone because the clutch was replaced not even a year ago. i was 110% unsatisfied with the job but there was nothing i could do because he "had nothing in writing" also known as "lost" his copys so that there was nothing to hold him accountable. fantastic im pissed. ill be calling them tomorrow. the best part is that i noticed someone spray painted next to his building "BLANK NAME- IS A THIEF!" and now i understand why

Well, it's not a guarantee but does your clutch engage really high, like just as you're about to let off the pedal? If not, then that may not be it, but it's definitely something to check out.
Keep driving, see if it happens again. If it is the clutch, it'll happen more and more often.

Re: (Chilled Man)

I've done it 3 times on the highway and each time it did the rpm spike. As for the sound I'm not sure because even with the windows down it's hard to Hear anything at 75 mph. I do know what sound your talking about because I heard it before which I'd why it was replaced a year ago. Also you said that it's possible it's not the clutch... Then what are the other possibilities ?

Click and Clack offer the "Tree Test". Butt up to an immovable object ( Biiiiiig Tree...),
Put it in 5th and let out the clutch. A good clutch should shut the engine down with the quickness.
http://www.cartalk.com/piplaye...l.xml
They never mentioned a tire or something between the bumper and the tree...This worries me.
But I've heard them throw that one out there plenty. Sounds like they haven't been sued yet!
And its Cheap.

Re: (KurT5)

could be the torque convertor, DOH, that IS the clutch in your stick
Sure sounds like classic clutch slippage to me. You dont have any smell immediately after this happens like linings burning? Like someone else said, it'll happne more and more if it is the clutch.
Mine would do it at 100mph when I first noticed it on the T5 with about 50k miles. The NA did it about 85k. Same stuff.

Re: (64pvolvo1800)

son of a b*tch im pissed. It doesnt happen until about 75mph on the highway but your right it does sound just like the clutch. last time i had my clutch replaced (aka last year) it was chirpin an everything all the time off start up. if it is the clutch im gunna have to raise h*ll because i was cahrged 2000k for a clutch and most likely a resurfaced flywheel. and i was willing to pay 1400 knowing that the wheel, clutch, bearings, fork, ect were all replaced, but instead i was hosed.
As for your post. i dont smell anything burning after the slight slip. i have noticed it slips for maybe 300rpm then its good to go, ironically it doesnt drop back down in RPM though it picks up right where it left off. also i turned the wastegate back to how it originally was so theres no more of that BTW
I guess when I say "it may not be the clutch" it's really not good news, because if the clutch is slipping, something is causing it to slip, so you still have to take it all apart. I was just thinking that the clutch parts might be fine, it just might be something in the linkage that is keeping the clutch from fully engaging. Does that car have an internal slave cylinder? If the slave is on the outside, check for things on the linkage that might have slipped or moved out of adjustment. I'm not sure what kinds of adjustments are on that linkage though.

Re: (Bearclaw)

long story short the whole deal with the clutch replacement went to sh*t. They refused to tell me anything they did to the car before i paid the bill and after i paid the bill they simply wrote "clutch kit" and refused to tell me where, how much, what parts ect ect. Longer story short we went to DMV an better business burero thing and because they conveniently lost the paperwork they couldnt do anything. I called them today to ask about their warrenty and it was 12month (im 2 weeks over) they told me blah blah blah resurface (and a clutch kit contains pressure plate and clutch) then they asked my name i told them he said f*ck you you got DMV involved and hung up
