I have the '07 S80 AWD and not sure if the shifting is supposed to be choppy/bumpy from gears 1-3 using automatic. I have the 4C and shifting was the same in all three modes. The roughest shift is most noticable from 1st to 2nd. Can anyone relate to my experience? I think it is getting gradually worse, but can't say for sure. I picked up the car used with 8k miles so I'm not sure how it was driven before I bought it.
Most of my driving is city and suburban, not a whole lot of highway miles. Since I am coming up on the 30k mile service I may just ask for a tranny oil change as well depending on what ya'll say in the forums.

I know from a stop, when I give gas, it often doesn't have a smooth delivery and more or less jerks a bit. Then I go up to 2500 or 3000 RPM's, and get a good bit of a rough shift, and it decreases as the gears go up. I have always assumed that was because you push the RPM's higher in lower gears to get things going, so the difference in RPM's when you shift from 1st to 2nd is higher than say 5th to 6th, so you would get a rougher shift.
Also, it greatly depends on how you play with the pedal. If you slowly push the pedal down until you reach your desired speed, you will get a nice smooth shift pattern. But if you give lots of gas, and just when it is about to shift, you let off, you will get a choppy shift and a good jerk. Also, if you give lots of gas, and before it shifts, let off for just an instance, and then give gas back again (riiiiight before you feel it is going to shift), you will get a very quick shift that is quite rough and the most jerky. Its almost feels as if you are letting it disengage the first gear, and giving gas/pushing it to engage the second.
Thats my experience. So I would say your car is fine, but I'm just a weee kiddo, so maybe a more experienced adult can chip in here.

Speaking of tranny oil - I did grind my gears one time when coming to a stop (threw it into park while still creeping a bit). Should I consider changing the fluid, even though it was only one time and not that bad?

There is a software update for the transmission shifting. It wont make it go away, but helps. I dont have the software # handy, just say it shifts rough.
Tim

Cool, thanks I will. I have to take it in for some software recall anyway.

Re: (nicebag)

Lately I've been experiencing a rough downshift as I come to a stop light. The last 1 or 2 downshifts to get back to 1st gear can seem very hard (even though I'm basically coasting to a stop).
The other thing I have started to experience is that if I'm accelerating and I let off the gas, it will unnaturally stay in gear (and thus slow down a little due to engine breaking) as opposed to doing an automatic up-shift. This really feels strange.
I will definitely ask for the transmission software update at my next service.
