Hello, I'm new to this website! I'm also new to the volvo owning scene. I recently bought a pretty nice 1980 volvo 242 dl with 120k miles on it. It runs pretty well, only problem is at idle it shakes a lot. I tried fuel injection cleaner (at someone elses reccomendation) but that didnt help, i cleaned and gapped spark plugs. Anything else i can try? When i pop the hood with it running and look at the engine it is shaking around a lot. It seems like it needs new engine mounts. Anyone else experience this? Thanks!

Welcome to Swedespeed, Charles.
Could be sheared motor mounts but the car may need a general maintenance performed including flame trap, throttle body and intake system.
George Dill

Re: rough idle: engine mounts? (gdill2)

So. ive been noticing that after you turn the car off even after the key is out the engine makes one final shudder then turns off. This leads me to believe that it's not the engine mounts? I dont know if that helps anyone troubleshoot this better? Im going to check the flame trap today, I was reading in chilton that the way to do it is to remove it and apply a vaccum to it and see if any air comes through. Would any vaccum, say one for vaccuming the carpet do for this? i've never tried this sort of thing before... I'm a pretty big noob when it comes to working on cars, but I have a strong desire to learn! haha, anyways i really appreciate the help!

Re: rough idle: engine mounts? (gdill2)

So one more question, i am trying to check the o-ring around the injectors, to remove an injector do i pull it straight it out? or does it unscrew? i dont want to just start trying things and end up breaking something. Thanks.

Remove CI fuel injector: Get 10 mm socket, 6" extention, rachet. ( sp?) Remove the 10mm bolt from the injector pull streight up. Easy. Some times the "o"ring does not come out with the injector, use a flash light, look in to the opening and grab it out with a pick. Discard old o ring install new one with petrolium jelly and reseat with 10 mm bolt. Tighten to 25-35 inch pounds.
Also replace distributor cap, rotor, plug wires, spark plugs. May help the dieseling issue you are having.

Re: (DVolvoguy777)

cool thank you! yeah, i replaced the distributor cap, rotor and wires. Next on the list is the injector seals. I actually was able to get the idle less rough with the work so far. Thanks again.
