Well I was excited to finally take my R on a longer than and hour trip for the first time since I got it. Ended up not going so well though. I noticed that every bump i hit on the highway my car felt like it would shift back and forth a little. To compare, it was kind of like hitting a quick patch of ice sliding and then hitting the road again. Is this what this side hop is that everyone is talking about? It was actually kind of scary especially when giong 75mph. This was a very noticeable shift mostly in the rear end. Also anytime I would hit a bump with my cruise control on, the bump would deactivate the cruise control. Then to top is all off on my way home I was filling up at the gas station and I rolled my window down and it went down crooked so I tried to push the window button to roll it up and the window glass broke so now the window doesn't go down or up and just makes a loud crunching noise. By the way it was raining and 54 degrees the whole ride home with the window stuck open and broke. Back to the dealer AGAIN!!!

Re: Road trip equaled bad trip. (JRL)

I also notice side hop...which is much worse when my tires are inflated to 42 psi plus for autocrossing...I usually run at 37 psi which seems to lessen the side hop...cruise should not turn off on it's own when you hit a bump. The only time my cruise would turn off or not work, is when I needed my clutch sensor switch replaced.

Bummer man. I also had some quite noticeable side-hop when driving my car back from Nashville.....I thought something was wrong and it kind of freaked me out a bit, then learned that this was a normal thing for the R.
I used to have a similar sidehop in my BMW when driving on the snowy highways....never a very good feeling - I'm hoping the R stays planted on the roadway a bit better than the Bimmer.

Sidehop is the worst when your tires are worn. 0 degrees toe in the rear end helps a little.

Is side hop only on the R models? Ive never had anyone complain about it at the dealership, and i dont notice it at all in my 04 s60. It does have the sport suspension.
It sounds like your window regulator failed at the worst possible time. Hopefully you get it fixed quickly.

JRL, pardon my french, but who the fudge are you? Technicians cant know everything that goes wrong with every car all the time. If a customer doesnt complain about it, and i dont own the car to experience it on my how will i ever know about it?
You may be helpful from from time to time, but i find quite often you are just rude. There is no need to be condescending, or talk down to someone because they are not on the same page as you.

I've noticed a bit of side hop myself, but I have almost worn tires and I didn't have the read set to 0 toe. Regarding the cruise control, depending on the conditions to trigger it, if the anti skid has to kick in cruise control goes off. I've had it happen once or twice, but also noticed the anti skid lamp flash at me when it happens. Perhaps the side hop you experienced was enough to trigger the anti skid (traction control, whatever you want to call it) and in turn shut off cruise control.

Yeah the side hope was worst when I would hit a crack in the road that they covered with tarmac to patch it. Pretty much a decent size bump would cause this shift. I eventually got used to it but at times when going along a curve on the highway it when it gets a bit freaky. Anyways I will get the rear toe checked out and figured out what happened to the window. I do have brand new tires at the correct psi so hopefully I can rule that out as a symptom to the side hope

They all will do it with worn tires.
There are new rear control arm bushings available from a Volvo TNN, unfortunately they will not be free if you're out of warranty.
New tires and rear toe set to 0 or almost 0 will help a TON
IPD trac spec sway bars also help, you need to tighten up the rear end

Re: (JRL)

I occasionally have side-hop that is severe enough to shut off the cruise control. I think it is the DSTC being triggered which shuts off the cruise. I hate 4C!

Re: (hoagrod)

hoagrod, sorry to hear it, feels weird when the car side hops doesn't it.
Borton is putting new bushings in for me on thursday, covered under warranty, inquire about it at kline when you go in for sure. I notice the hop when in comfort the most at highway speeds. Sport reduced it quite a bit but was still there but for long cruises i'd prefer comfort. I'll let you know how the new bushings affect things.
sucks about the window, lucks gotta change soon...

Well I dropped my car off this morning to get the window and AM radio fixed. I metioned the side hop on the highway and they told me that it's due to low profile tires above 65 mph and that it's normal. How do i go about explaining to them that it may need rear bushings or rear toe adjustment? It just seems to me that they(volvo dealership) have no idea about these TNN's or the common problems that the R has. How do you address tnn's to dealerships?
