Some of you are familiar with my car and its mods, here is the official list:
Phuzzy Motorsports Downpipe
Phuzzy Motorsports FMIC Kit
EST Ultra-Flo intake (modifed)
SVR 3" exhaust
R Kelly intake (integrated into EST)
IPD TCV
Poly Upper Engine and Lower Trans mounts
Prosport Digital Boost gauge
Wheels...
Some vinyl...
And the recently added Stage II Rica tune from Viva. I have had the tune for a few weeks now and have driven short and long distances with it.
Let me start by saying that I am happy that I installed supporting mods before the tune. It allowed me to get a feel for the car in different "stages." The intake changes the sound of the car, but compared to other mods, the power is not felt as much. I have owned both the EST 2x2" exhaust and now the SVR 3" exhaust. IMHO, having tracked my car with the EST, the SVR is much better. With the EST, my car had a weird back pressure type gargle under mid-hard acceleration. It sounded like the car was choking. With the SVR, I backfire once in a while and I never get the feeling that the exhaust is restricted. Add the fact that the SVR sound sexual...anyways, moving on. The IPD TCV was more of a precautionary mod, because I did not feel like dealing with the crappy stock TCV. The downpipe is a great mod for the P2 R cars for many reasons: the turbo spool can be heard much more distinctively and you can feel the power! The butt dyno loved the downpipe! As far as FMIC, it was a no brainer to me. The stock setup choked the performance of the car in warm weather and I did not feel like dealing with that. Also, with the IC piping being larger/less restrictive, the car sounds even better. You can hear the intake inhale and exhale like never before.
Finally, the tune. Take all of the above into consideration and the car seemed a bit hollow. It sounded fast, felt quicker than stock, but it needed to be tied together. With the tune, the car has been taken to another level. Right off the bat, consider that fact that the tune adds more power than any of the other mods, so you know it is going to make the car faster. On the stock tune I hit a consistent 14psi with spikes to 16-17psi at time. With the tune, I hit 19-20 consistently with spikes to 22psi. With the stock tune, the car hit boost and pulled hard, but for a short time. You could feel that you were accelerating, but you lost that "pull you into your seat" feeling quickly. With the tune, boost hits like a brick wall, and you are pulled until high in the rpms. The power does not taper down or die like it did with the stock tune. It is almost like the car gets another 1000 rpms to create aggressive, speed producing power.
The PPC is extremely easy to use. So easy that it is pretty much not worth commenting on.
PROS:
All previous mods are tied together and they feel as though they work in harmony.
Viva - George took time to answer all of my questions, no matter how ridiculous, and in a timely fashion. Shipping was quick.
PCC is easy to use!
CONS:
Price. Tuning our cars IS expensive, sorry.
There is a lot of hype between IPD and Rica right now. I ended up going with Rica because the PPC is much easier and quicker than the IPD laptop tune. I didn't get as much of a warm and fuzzy from IPD, as I did with Viva regarding the tune. YMMW, I hold Viva and IPD both in high regard.
GiRaff3's rating:
A must have for R owners.
I have not written many reviews before, so you might like or dislike mine.

Nice job, Bob!
I like the way you described the mods and what you felt after each step, then how the tune brought everything together.
I may wind up doing a DP, PHMIC, and a tune on this car now, and this is exactly what i was looking for.
Cheers!

The stage 3 kit from viva looks to be a really good and well thought out option! (especially for when I get out of school)

just letting people know... the same can be said for the speedtuning tune i got for my t5. pretty much on the dot... except I was never really spiking boost stock till I got my cutout installed. it would be consistent 12 psi with a 13psi spike. with the tune it's about 20 psi spike leveled out to about 19. I have the SAME EXACT SENTIMENTS about the speedtuning, and oliver was a delight to work with.

Yeah, I would be leaning more towards the 13.3 or 4 ish range also. I was figuring the Stage 3 kit would get us into high 12's though. nudge, nudge.
