Replacing spark plugs after 4 years?

408 Views 8 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Gary-16-Xc90
When I contacted my dealer to make an appointment for the yearly service, the receptionist
mentioned that spark plugs have a lifespan of 96KKm (60Kmiles) or 4 years.
I never heard of spark plugs that have a lifespan limit based on time.
Was he just trying to generate business, or is there thruth in his statement?

I replaced my plugs at 40k miles because experienced misfires. Not a big deal. You need an 8mm ratchet for the ignition coils and a 14mm plug socket preferably magnetic so you don’t drop the new plugs into the hole. Can’t cost more than €60.
According to Volvo the plugs are due for replacement at 60k miles/100,000km and not after 4 years. It’s not like fluids or oil which has 1-2 years change interval even if you don’t drive the vehicle.
The plugs are on an angle, not straight up/down. As mentioned, you need a thin wall magnetic spark plug socket.
Ignore dealer recommendation. You should replace it every 40k - 45k miles if you care about your engine. They are easy to replace... DIY.

In your personal opinion/experience do you think this can be the reason or one of the reasons for some of the failed engine reports?
Thanks for the replies!
I will leave the plugs as and where they are :)

I would thinks so only on 2016 models or models that didn't get the updated spark plugs. The updated spark plugs on drive E ends with 604. I don't recall the whole part number.

2016 models (XC90) had the old design piston rings. They will cause oil consumption leading to an engine failure.

From looking on my Spark plugs after 40k miles, they don't look very healthy. Thus, I would definitely recommend to replace them early at 40k miles since they are cheap ($45) and easy to replace (DIY).

The MY16 XC90 T8s in the US market were updated and were NOT affected by “old design piston rings” and “oil consumption” issues. I am not sure about other markets.

Be sure to look up the TJ for the precise applicability by “engine” serial number - not the VIN and not simply MY16 XC90.
