About a month ago, I took my '04 S60 to Ontario Volvo to take advantage of their complimentary auto clinic and was advised to replace the front CV boots for the low price of $980. Two independent mechanics had advised I replace the axel instead b/c it was cheaper and easier to do. Replacing the axel seems to make sense, particularly since my car is north of 150k miles, but still drives like a champ. If I go with the axel option, does it matter if the axel is OEM or aftermarket? Are there particular aftermarket options that are better?

I generally prefer to buy OEM parts & get labor done by relatively inexpensive yet competent independent mechanics, but would opt for aftermarket parts if it presents a substantial cost savings & doesn't have a notable quality difference w/ OEM.

Go oem on this kind of parts. Replacing is not something that you can do the normal tools, on youtube there is some videos that can give you a general idea of how to do it.
