Was at the shop today getting the standard oil change (at AAA Car Care Center) and the "sales guy" came up to me and said the tech did their usual 30 point inspection that my front brakes probably needs to be replaced soon. It's down to approx. 3mm. But he did say that usually they would turn the rotor and just replace the pads but Volvo recommends and they recommend replacing the rotor as well as the pads. Total with new rotors over $510.

Just wondering if it is true that I will and it is recommended by Volvo that I replace the rotors along with new pads or the guy is just blowing smoke at me.

Thanks in advance.

I replaced pads only, It depends on if your rotors are warped or out of spec. Do you feel vibration when hitting the brakes? = warped rotors. You have a 2006, I say pads only. It takes maybe 1 hour to do pads on the R. Buy pads and DIY.

I went and had my fluid flushed...had a set of fronts in the floorboard. I told them if the pads were 4mm or less replace them with those pads. So I get this call later, they said yeah you need new pads....take about 30 minutes (true) I said ok just use the ones I have behind the seat. The reply "oh, ok with your own pads, it will be $135". Seriously? So your labor rate is $270 an hour? F that...and F dealers that get pissy when you bring your own parts purchased at half price from Tasca.

That price is crazy, brakes on the R are SO easy. Read the how to guides on the forum, find a buddy with a garage and tools, save $$.

The rotors do not add mutch time for the DIY project either if they are needed. Parts on tasca and a couple at most should be cost you about half of what was quoted. you really only need a basic jack w/ a stand and wrenches to do the job. If you don't do your own maintanence, the R brakes are a perfect place to start learning. Just don't grease/lube betweed the pad and rotor face.

Is this your 1st front brake job? If yes, that is a rip off. Just do the pads, leave the rotors alone, they are easily good to 2 sets of pads. You do not even have to remove the calipers to do R brakes, AFAIK R brakes are the eaisest to replace of any car.

I would do a full brake fluid flush too.

No warpage

Rotors are definitely not warped. I'll check the post on how to DIY (just have to channel my 11th grade shop class skills). I thought it may have been B.S. The pads have never been changed (still stock).

Definitely doing the flush though (has 74k miles on it).

Definitely a DIY, and don't bother with rotors unless yours are cooked (which I would doubt). Our rotors are pretty awesome. After 4 1/2 years, I still have no warping whatsoever.
Front pad replacement is <30 minutes total & much cheaper.

LOL wow the dealer was smoking crack. Ben just go on youtube and put in "changing brake pads on an STI".... watch the video its the same for our calipers.
I'm actually doing my fronts tom in the garage and flushing the whole system. Told tie wife to get her favorite book or magazine we will be there a while.. she is used to it tho!

So heres the deal bro.
DO NOT CUT THE ROTORS!!!!!!! big mistake! In the 6 years at volvo i never once cut rotors.
As long as there above min safety specs & min pad replacement spec then leave the rotors be. Yea no i cant remember the spec off the top of my head. if there under the replace them

please do not let them cut the rotors.
and slaping pad w/o new rotors is OK to do.
but is is NOT ok to cut the rotors

No pop tarts in my lunch box, just twinkies ...making you giggle yet? ;) Buddy guy, if I were in your town you'd be my R tech for sure, you have my respect. Where brakes are concerned have you read the myths of warped rotors are stop tech? http://www.stoptech.com/tech_info/wp_warped_brakedisk.shtml

I agree that the R rotors are awesome, I've taken my original set too far, closing in on the min spec of 30mm (I measure mine twice/year when I swap my wheels for summer/winter). With ceramic/semi-ceramix pads the rotors last even long (in my experience with two volvos). Problem with the semi-ceramics I noticed is break judder which feels like warped rotors but a re-bedding always fixes the judder problem. When I was running Axxis Delux pads (semi-ceramic) I often had judder from high speed stops (long sweeping highway off-ramp ending at a red light - very fun but not fun when the light was red and lots of cars waiting to make a right).

hahahahaha I love it !!! No pop tarts for you!!!! ok but you still get a lunch box! ;)
I am about to google but for a different reason hahahahaha . i got to look up what stolen Thermalite pegs are for be it "flatland" or "street" (grinding) or "park" (grinding ,stalls, & dancing on your bike LOL)

Good looks on the specs brother mack jiggitey JACK!!!! hahahahaha
if yur ever in town Look me up ill look over your car out of Rlove and let you know hows sees doing from a techs stand point.
Im working on JonnyC's car in a week or so. its going to be fun work on his R restore his faith in the dealer. and shoot the poo it will be FUN!

If you can't handle a DIY brake job on this car, then sell it for a Prius and take up gardening!! You can literally do all four wheels in under an hour...

Buy the Volvo pads, which come with the gold pad grease (for use on the BACK of the pads, by the way) - it is fantastic - use it now on my Cobra Brembo's.

When I had my R, I popped in F & R pads at around 30,000 miles - cost about $150 total. The rotor turning is usually not needed - if you need rotors, just buy new ones.

I recently did my front pads and rotors at 66K miles. I was down to less than 2mm on the pads and a Volvo tech I trust recommended changing the rotors as well. I bought the pads and rotors from John at Boston Village Volvo (excellent pricing!) and had it shipped to Buffalo for pick up. The process is very similar to the STI video on Youtube and was pretty easy to do in my driveway (first time doing my Volvo brakes but have done on my Mustang and Lincoln LS before).
